Clients like that are the worst nightmares :')
And for those reading our conversation (besides spoilers etc xd) let me assure you that yes people do that. I don't know why but it makes our job a lot harder then it needs to be -.-
But what really makes me mad that your manager didn't back you up in that first scenario and you had to do all that work for free.
Makes me appreciate that I get paid by my boss and he has to deal with making clients pay, how much they pay etc.
I still have to write down how long it takes me to do stuff and the way I do that determines if it will be an extra charge or within the normal fee but in the end my boss decides what gets charged and what not and the decision affects his pocket first ^^°
I'm glad he's trying to be fair and make sure you're fairly compensated. It really helps, especially in this economy. When I had employees, I had to track most of their time because they wouldn't, and I wanted them at least paid for their hours here even if we had quiet days with little work.
My other nightmare client wasn't the client so much as the lack of training. A new corporation for an ambitious pilot who couldn't afford their CPA anymore and went to our tiny place. I was expected to completely set up the bookkeeping account with no oversight, and his mom expected each ledger to be fancy and proper with codes. I was 22 and hadn't even had accounting classes because my major was computer science. I understood basics like expense and income and could set up ledgers for that, but I'd never done double-entry bookkeeping or stock or payroll, and I was so overwhelmed.
I don't understand why they didn't record their time. But I guess I'm just to used by our system now. In the beginning it was really stressing me out but now not any more.
Your story kinda reminds me of a client which I took over while they were rapidly expanding. They went from a few transactions each month to hundreds so the old way things were setup didn't work anymore. I had like one or two years experience on bookkeeping by then so at least a little bit but setting everything thing up while they were always coming up with something new :') they also started to hire people and each time I did their payroll they had something for me which I've never done before. Great for learning but also very stressful ^^°
I kinda hate it when people come to small places and expect stuff being done cheaper as with bigger companies
Like our time is valuable too and we also have expenses to cover and can't work for free
What are they expecting?!
Its also one of my pet peeves when grown men are running companies and have all the finances and tax stuff handled by their mothers -.-
But I guess that's because the ones I had to deal with are usually trying to boss us around complain about everything especially when we try to bother their precious sons with questions because they run a business -.-
I've had five employees and the ones older than me were the worst, and laziest. I had one that would ONLY do taxes. She would not process payments, make copies, answer the phone, nothing. Just do the tax returns. She regularly talked down to me in front of the clients, expected me to make her copies while I had clients at my own desk, and openly complained about me to them for asking her to do basic duties, like answering the phone. When I fired her, she used my paper, ink, and internet to launch her own tax business. She died two years later, so not an issue any more. Turned me into a Little Red Hen. I run solo now. If I have to do all the work, then I'll do ALL the work, and keep all fruits of my labour.
Yeah, people don't realize just HOW MUCH OVERHEAD even small businesses have! We may not have mega-million TV commercials, but our software and oh-my-gosh the
insurances.
I'm not a big fan of business owners who dump responsibilities off on their friends and family either. I've technically only got one bookkeeping client. She's in her 80s, works a full time job, she's a full time caregiver to her father (her mother recently passed), is expected to cook full meals for everybody every day, AND has to handle all the receipts for her husband's shop. Like, give the ol' gal a break...
