Tell me about it, I have studied German for 20 years and just can't make a full sentence to save my life. I really should just say screw it and move there for a few months.

That and I forget my own language.

Ah yes, the "learning a language because you don't have a choice" method. I'd be too much of a coward for that, lol

Have you tried conversation classes, for the German?

Yeah, survival method.
That's what most emigrants do after all.
My grandparents moved to Germany and all the German they knew was from reading a reference pocket book they bought.

Not my method of choice either, but if you have to then you definetely do learn.

I already did that too. I moved to Japan without knowing a lick of Japanese and ended up being able to have a conversation after a year just by listening around.

At least with German I have a head start? I mean, I know all the basics, I am used to hearing it and I've even finished Duolingo. A few months should be more than enough.

@Moon Star: I could. I need to hunt for that. Or I should hunt for German friends, I need friends anyway.

@Amura, Oh, if you have to move anyways, then it's definitely the method of choice! But if it's just for the sake of learning another language, I'd leave it as a last resort. The sheer stress would kill me. :mcargh:

@Kuuki, Noice! And friends would definitely be the best method, but finding the friends? Suddenly the difficulty level is increased by 20, lmao.

Aha and here is me who moved to the other side of the world just because she was fed up with everything, needed a break and while it was supposed to be for a year ended up moving permanently.

@Moon Star: I know right. I wouldn't even know where to start. Joining language exchange circles? In the middle of a pandemic?
And then there's the issue that I am incredibly picky when it comes to people I call friends so yeah, I say that but it's probably not going to happen XD

Wow, really?
You just decided you would move to some other place and start over?
That's SO brave.
I would never be brave enough for such a feat.

I'm not sure I would say brave, there's a bit of stupid mixed in there XD

But seriously, my life was going nowhere, my job was making me miserable and I didn't see myself there for my whole life, my mom was literally going back to being a moody teenager (seriously had to yell at her to stop yelling at the phone at night considering I had work the next day) and my ex-boyfriend was being an idiot.
All of this sent me into yet another depressive episode, bad enough that I nearly stopped eating and I know from experience that if it gets that bad I have to do something or it'll get even worse. Figured getting away from it all wouldn't hurt and I had enough savings for a year that's how I ended up in Japan for what was supposed to be a year of vacations. Ended up meeting my husband 3 months after coming and one month after telling the ex-boyfriend he could go to hell (because he ended up ghosting me ^^).

@Kuuki, Yeah, it's hard enough under the best of circumstances, but the current context would just make for an iffy situation. The best option would probably be virtual conversation classes?

Also, you were definitely crazy to move like that, lol. Especially to Japan, if you ask me! I definitely want to visit for a few months, if not longer, but considering the work culture, living there seems like it would be a nightmare. But I'm really glad it all worked out for you. :)

Except husband is home all the time for work and we heard everything from everywhere in the apartment. Scheduling is a mess XD

Oh don't worry I've never intended to work for a Japanese company, I didn't even intend to stay for longer than my allotted year.
I'm mostly doing odd jobs here and there, part time work and some freelance work, being married I'm (very) limited in how much I can earn for taxes, retirement and insurance purposes and it's not just worth it in our present situation.
