I'm still not getting to January's goals, but I'm making great strides through the stacks of recommended books that I haven't gotten to previously.
Read Toni McGee Causey's "Charmed and Dangerous",
George MacDonald's "The Wise Woman",
Juliana Grey's "A Lady Never Lies"
now I'm struggling to get into Alice Duncan's "Spirits Revived".

The first two weren't bad and didn't take long. I really enjoyed the sort of lyric writing in "The Wise Woman", that one was fun. It took a lot of starts and stops to get through Juliana Grey's book, though. And "Spirits Revived" might be set in an interesting time period but it's first person so it is VERY slow going.

quite a list indeed! I guess the plan doesn't matter if you're happy with the progress. and getting through so many recommendations sounds impressive to me :mchappy:

Yeah, I'm trying hard to be pleased with the progress instead of feeling guilty/burdened over not making the original goals. It's surprisingly difficult to let go of the "I should have"s, even though this was something I set for myself, with no one outside affected by it, and was just supposed to be helpful. You'd think it would be simple but emotions never respond all that well to logic. >.< Personal growth -I won't give up on it! Someday it will happen! :qsweat:

Okay, finally finished "Spirits Revived"
It was interesting. The premise which had me hooked seems like a random gimmick, though, since the implications were never explored, followed through on in any way, or even alluded to again beyond a line at the very end saying it was never repeated (or explained). So..... that was pretty disappointing. And it turns out it was in the middle of a series. Decent enough of a story but I won't be looking up the others. If it were in third person, maybe, just because I do enjoy that time period, but.... no.

oh. it's a pity you were disappointed. on the other hand, now you know it's nothing to care about and won't feel bad anymore about something that was recommended to you but never read.

I returned to reading 'Artful' by Ali Smith. my, it's so beautiful

Have you already finished "Spinning Silver", then? How was it?

Coming into the thread a month late to say I'm challenging myself to read one book in 2019. Not an anthology, not a collection of essays. Just one full length novel. The past few years I've found it so hard to make the time to read anything that wasn't required for class or a fanfic.

This would be in addition to finishing Uprooted, which I started 3 summers ago. :mcheh:

Thank you! <3

I don't know how to feel about it, honestly. In theory, I like it - it's fantasy, it's pretty based on fairy tale conventions and expands on them, and it has some neat imagery that's right up my alley - but... I guess it just didn't do what I wanted it to do? I'm going to have to reread some of it to remember exactly what happened and what I thought of it, but there was one thing in particular that was a big issue for me. :mcheh:
