That's true. It was just really funny, because she kept complaining about how expensive even canned lotus root is, and how good it was going to be to grow her own.... and then she couldn't bring herself to eat any of it. My mom is pretty wonderful, I'm very lucky. But I do like to laugh about her quirks. It's a good thing she laughs, too.
Ummm, I don't know how to say what they taste like. It is not a strong flavor, it is more subtle. So it will pick up a lot of the flavors of whatever you cook it with. The root is bland-starchy, but it is very crispy. Texture-wise it is more like radish than potato. The seeds... I've only ever had them puffed, like popped corn but lotus instead of corn. I like the flavor, but again, it'll pick up whatever spice you put on it. No, wait, lotus flour from ground seeds, I've had a coconut pudding that used lotus flour thickener. That tasted mostly of coconut though. Anyhow. The leaves kind of almost taste flowery? Well, fresh. When they're dried they're pretty bland, but they do make good edible wrappers! I know a bunch of people don't eat them, but we were never that picky. It's like peeling an apple -you CAN. But just because some people peel it, doesn't mean you can't eat the skin. Plus, if you marinade them and eat them as salad they're better than bitter lettuce-leaf salads! (I don't like summer lettuce. It's always so bitter!) I've had lotus flower tea but not in any other form, and there was a bunch of other herbs in the tea (it was supposed to be medicinal and wasn't exactly the best flavor), so I'm not sure how the flower tastes. I suspect it'll be more intensely flower-y than the leaves, though.....
Popodoki, silent killer geisha sounds like a good band name. Also a good costume description... I was thinking of those Japanese Oni (Or Yurei) who can take the form of beautiful women, and then they turn out to have some sort of terrifying ability. Like the head will float off the body, trailing a spine and guts, and zoom through things. Or float above the snow and freeze people to death with a look. Or whatever else.
