I would recommend investing in a knuffel from knufftropolis, since they make you back the food they cost and more once you level them and dig with them. They can find food while digging, but they also give you 1000 fp for every tenth level!
You don't really need to buy materials if you buy knuffel, since they also find them by digging.
But you could of course also go ahead and buy yourself some nice avi items if you prefer!

(On the nails, I don't bite mine but I do keep them cut VERY short, because somehow they always end up dirty otherwise. Maybe it would help to actually wear gloves in the garden? But gloves never fit right and you don't have the sensitivity when you're wearing them, so when you're trying to transplant and want to tease out root systems, you just can't... But yeah. Very short nails. So mostly I don't paint them at all. My nieces like to have nail-painting parties, though, so when they are around, my nails get painted. And usually most of the rest of my fingertips, too...)
