I'm reading a collection of Jewish Folktales right now.

They're so funny!! Even the depressing ones make you laugh...

That's the one where they constantly refer to boots as 'shitkickers' and somehow can sustain each other by passing blood around to each other, conservation of energy can go hang?

I keep ending up reading them anyhow at libraries... but the weird physics/biology of how sustainability in food works always throws me out of the story.
On the other hand, she writes pathos very well, and it's nice to see stories like that in an actual believably-modern setting! Maybe I should give them another try once more.

Needed a break from the folk-tales. They might be funny but it's also a little heartbreaking in larger doses. So now I'm reading "Cygnet", by Patricia McKillip.

Yesssss, do!

They really are great.

Here's one of my favorites (it's short, don't worry):

An old Jewish woman, just turned 90, became ill and called the doctor. He examined her carefully and looked doubtful.
"Can you cure me, doctor?" the old woman asked, hopefully.
"Dear Granny," said the doctor soothingly, "you know what happens when one gets older. All sorts of ailments begin to happen. After all, a doctor is not a miracle man. He cannot make an old woman younger."
"Who's asking you to make me younger, doctor?" protested the old woman, irritably. "What I want is to grow older!"

I read it out to the Elders I lived with, and all of them laughed so hard...

Edited by Nathan Ausubel. It's the "A Treasury of Jewish Folklore" from Crown Publishers.
Dunno if it's still in print; I picked up this copy as a used-book-on-sale find.
It is well-worn, but still legible and that's all that matters!

(Ha ha ha, I couldn't tell if you meant that in the sarcastic sense or literal -and then I realized: Of course! Both!)
