Eh, it doesn't pay all my bills or anything. It was more a matter of, I got tired of family and friends and classmates, etc, all using me as a free editor, and started charging. It didn't take very long before word got around! It has tapered off a lot since it started (school was more than a decade ago now!) but there's usually still several term papers or dissertations or articles every quarter.
I'm not sure how you would go about becoming a professional editor in that it would be your main career; but I suspect either a business degree with a minor in the languages you want to edit in (or major in the language(s) and minor in business) would be a good start.

thanks for the corrections! makes me happy that those were the only typos! XD
I've been pretty paranoid about the quality of my writing lately. you know, that freezing fear of not being good enough :mcmeh:
I'd like to be a professional writer but I've been avoiding any writing at all ever since this idea came into my head...

Oh gosh, don't do that Alice. Writing is about spirit and passion. The self editing comes later, and that's what friends are for, to check those things for you.

I'm not even doing this to me, I'm just not doing anything. just sitting there and going for whatever activity there is that is not writing. basically instead of developing something I could be good at I'm cultivating my being good at nothing :mcdead:

Well... I hear you. But that also comes with the bug. The creativity bug that is. Tis a fickle beast. I have a degree in writing and a screenplay in the works but for the life of me I just can't touch it. So I've been arting instead. I need to practice and just crank out art again so that I can maybe try my hand at making some money at it. I'm unemployed and have been for a while, need to start making my strengths work for me!

Have you tried doing the little flash-fiction writing challenges to get you going?
Or sometimes you can watch a show you've never seen before with the sound turned off, and then try and write out what you think the story was, that sometimes gets my cousin over his writer's block.

I wouldn't call my case a writer's block. more like a self-esteem issue. I need to get myself back to times when I was writing and had no idea that was even a hobby, but at the moment even the tiniest project seems like something I'll inevitably be judged for so I just can't "relax". it's not a writer's block. I know what to write and how to write. I'm just afraid to fail and make mistakes and right now it's activated in the worst area imaginable. so. yeah.

having a degree in writing should be a nice confidence boost XD

Confidence maybe, it's not good for little else. Wish I'd known that back then x.x Fear of failure is a hard thing to overcome without failing. Gotta just try.

I'm no expert or anything, but knowing what I do about the job of editors Alice, I would definitely not let fears of making mistakes hold you back from pursuing your writing. The people who are the best writers are definitely not always the ones with the best grammar, or the ones who write everything completely coherently the first time though. If they did, editors wouldn't exist. Sure it's good to strive for your best, but when companies/publishers/ect look at a piece of writing/an author in general, they care less about the minor mistakes, and more about how everything functions as a whole. Grammar and spelling and typos and small logical inconsistencies can be fixed really easily when you've got a writer who's on to something great.

I do understand it's hard when you have anxiety though, I'm not trying to suggest your fears will melt away from this piece of advice or anything. But, sometimes it helps to look from a logical perspective.
