@Merry: Do you have bit grammar knowledge? You know what subject of a sentence is? Subjects in German are always Nominativ. Dativ is indirect object, Akkusativ is direct object. I can't really explain it if you don't look at the grammar at all because it's... well yes grammar :'D There is also prepositions that all want a case too but this is something you have to learn (mit, nach, bei, seit, von, zu, aus = always Dativ durch, für, ohne, um, gegen = always Akkusativ)
Genitiv is really rarely used in spoken language. It's mainly used for possession.
Das Kind des Vaters > des Vaters is Genitiv and marks that it is his child. In spoken language a Dativ with preposition is used more commonly > Das Kind vom Vater.
Man I'm no teacher. I can't explain that in an understandable way xD

@Myth: Gosh I have no idea how all that is called in English but yes basically your name, adress and all is recorded by the city you live in. But as far as I know only by the city, not by the state. So if you don't know where he lives it could become hard. And I don't know if they would give you these information at the telephone and I can't afford to travel through the whole country to ask them personally^^; I could try telephone book. Otherwise no idea besides check facebook :'D

Ah, yes! In Dutch I rock at grammar but in English I don't know all the names of the word kinds. ^_^;;
I don't have anything against looking at the grammar, I really want to learn the full kaboodle 'cause I want to speak fluent German. But to understand all I need to know all. I have trouble getting all the information I need from one simple list. I mean, I don't even know what the Dativ for 'er' is for instance. I know I once had a scheme on them in my German lessons at high school, my teacher used to call it the Key to Success. But I don't have it anymore >>

Huh, direct and indirect objects? o.O
You mean like... crap... what we call Lijdend Voorwerp and Meewerkend Voorwerp? For instance the sentence:
"That woman has got a bunch of flowers for her sister."
That woman being the subject
a bunch of flowers being the 'Lijdend Voorwerp' (direct object / Akkusativ?)
her sister being the 'Meewerkend Voorwerp' (indirect object / Dativ?)

I also have no idea why it should be 'Das Kind vom Vater' and not 'Das Kind von Vater' really. :p
So 'Das Kind des Vaters' would be more sure for me to use, right?

You can also say 'Das Kind von Vater' but that would imply that he is your own father. You know that "vom" is short for "von dem" and removing the m just leaves 'von'. Without article it is considered a name. Still a Dativ, you just can't see it ;) Dativ because preposition "von" always wants a Dativ. mit, nach, bei, seit, von, zu, aus <- Always Dativ.
durch, für, ohne, um, gegen <- always Akkusativ
There are some that can take both and change their meaning by it buuut I would have to look them up.

Quick google search. Here pronouns: http://www.canoo.net/services/OnlineGra ... -Pers.html

Hmm your example works with a preposition. In German it translates with a preposition too because 'haben' is transitive (Verb wants only one object), indirect objects only exist in ditransitive sentences (verb wants two objects). In your sentence 'her sister' would be Akkusativ because 'für' wants an Akkusativ. If you use 'send' instead of 'has got' it would work.
That woman sent a bunch of flowers to her sister.
Diese Frau (subject>Nominativ) schickte ihrer Schwester (indirect> Dativ) einen Blumenstrauß (direct>Akkusativ)

The more I try to explain it the more German seems completely horrible to me :'D
Maybe it would be easier if I knew a little about Dutch. They are sister languages after all >.<"
Use of Genitiv is always sure. My German professor even claimed that people using Dativ instead of Genitiv are stupid. Thank you Mister prof :mcmeh:
When you learned it in school don't you have a book that explains everything?

But how do you know it's 'von dem' and not 'von den'. :p
That's my problem with German grammar. There are so many possibilities and you thoroughly need to know what means what, how to create what and what it's supposed to be... You need to know every bit of grammar to decide what to say to create a correct sentence. :')

I'm afraid I'm not so much in the mood for this, all the things I'm reading just aren't getting through. I'll try again tomorrow.
And yeah, they are sister languages, but it doesn't always help. Sometimes it makes things even worse.

Hahaha well I understand your professor. Why making things harder then they have to be? For a foreigner it would be safer to use that. :p
I did have a book in school, but in high school you don't have to buy your books, you borrow them from the school. So I had to return it at the end of the year. 6 years ago. :p

I am glad to see that example works though, that at least shows I understand what Dativ and Akkusativ is. I don't know how to use them yet but it's a start. If I can do it in Dutch, I can do it in German, right? Mind sending me some sentences I can defile? ;p

As said you know it by the preposition. If you have 'von' you always have a Dativ after it, so 'dem'. 'den' is Akkusativ :P The prepostion stuff is something you have to learn by heart I'm afraid^^;

Sentences. Sure. I'm bad at making them up but I can crawl through a book and pick some. Just gimme some time :>

You will rarely hear people using Genitiv and if they use it they are probably German professors ;P In written languages you will see it more often. Same goes for Präteritum (past tense). Not used in spoken language anymore. But the most common tense in literature.
In my regional dialect both, Dativ and Genitiv, are dead btw :P

I've only requested two things (one of which was already made, and I was super happy), and the other is just chillin' there. If I request something I really would like to see it, and it'd be one of the few I don't wait until the end of their span to buy. XD

Most confusing things to remember for Spanish grammar: estar/ser and the six (I think) tenses. They kill me. But I can usually manage, somehow. I've never gotten less than an A in that class.
