Hello everybody,

as our mods and admins had been discussing lately, we are having a serious botter problem here on KofK. As a first step of countermeasures, we were working on a CAPTCHA system.

I hereby announce that for the quest material found in the forums, this new CAPTCHA system is now in place, and so far it seems to be working. Please tell me if you find otherwise.

I honestly hope we don't have to get really nasty on this topic, I personally find our captcha for the registration already rather annoying to take.

[EDIT] Which is the reason why I implemented a completely different type of CAPTCHA question. You are shown five images, and are to click on the one that is described in the text above.

Though I already know how I would write a bot to circumvent our captcha method, I am hoping that since we can easily update the system with new images and questions, I can use this to keep ahead of bot programmers.

Please note that every failure at the CAPTCHA test is logged so we can identify users using bots for collecting, and that we are planning to add similar CAPTCHA measures to some other places as well - posting in the spam forum, for example, though we haven't decided on the exact modalities like how often...

[EDIT] Just in case there are people who don't know what CAPTCHA means, it's an acronym for "Completely Automated Public Turing-test to tell Computers and Humans Apart". Thus are all measures called where a task is given to users which are easy for humans to take, but complicated for a computer program to solve, to tell bots and real users apart, such as reading distorted text, identifying an image described with fuzzy text, and so on. Not sure if you read the post correctly, I myself don't think it's great we had to implement such measures in the first place... :mcmeh:

I'm sad to hear it had to be installed but I feel it's necessary at the same time..? :mcblush:

Is it different from the captcha that's on the registering page or is it the same? Basically I'm asking if the letters are clearer since it gets hard to see :qsweat:

It's very different, we made our own CAPTCHAs, because these standard text CAPTCHAs are really ...just annoying. I often have a hard time reading them and I am no bot! ;_;
You will notice that our CAPTCHAs are not difficult to understand at all.
While we try to fight botting we also tried hard not to minimize the fun this site is meant to be for users who play fair.

I would also like to take this occasion to remind everyone who even considers ever using any kind of bot/program/browser feature/external site in order to gain any kind of advantage over other users here that you are not "only" cheating, but that you are causing a severe damage to our server. Servers don't come for free. They cost a lot of money and time to keep them up and every user using a bot/etc. is damaging this site.

In your post you said there were 5 images. I've already found one of those captcha's, and i could only see 3 images. I could see there was a 4th, but i couldn't see what it was. I tried to scroll down, but it scrolls down with me, so I couldn't see any more than those 3 items...

I'm using Internet Explorer, but I don't know if that makes a difference.
