I think it makes sense in some jobs, although not in most.

I met this guy who was heavily tattooed and had a bunch of piercings.
He worked in a store which made tailored suits for business men; his image did not fit the store and although they hired him they told him that at work he should look like the kind of costumer they were attending to.
He removed his piercings every day before work, had perfectly tailored suits and formal shoes to wear to work, his hair was always well-cut, etc.
When he returned home, he went back to his grunge look and piercings.

For me it made sense that he had to look a certain way for the job.
But that did not stop them from hiring a tattooed guy (as the suit would cover almost it all) wih piercings (which were removable after all).
What would have been wrong was not hiring him, without giving him the choice to try to fit the company look.

You have hugged Hotarla!

One of the retail workers at my job has lots of tattoos that I can see going up his arms. I think they look so cool and he’s a really cheery guy when he speaks to customers. He also works as a chef in the retail kitchen as well. My employers doing seem to have any problem with his tattoos.

I just don't like the idea that you as yourself is not good enough.
You have to change yourself to please others and I just don't like that idea.
People worry too much about how people look.

Hmm.
I think how you present yoursel in society is important. Specially for companies which want to have an specific image.

In my job it's not relevant, and teachers usually wear quite casual clothes - we are surrounded by teenagers, I guess something should stick :mclaugh: I mean, my jeans and T-shirt are nothing out of the ordinary.
But I would not wear revealing clothes to class, for example. They would not portray the image expected of an educative center.

So I get that oher companies have certain expectations, but I think some of them are extremely outdated.
Women don't need make up or high heels to look professional. And, conversely, we can be professional with high heels and colorful make up.
Body tattoos do not make much of a difference imho, but I guess full face tattoos might impress some clients - so it might not the best choice for a person dealing with elders, for example.

yeah, we don't have to wear heels and stuff like that. As long as i portray a clean cut image, i think i'm fine. xD besides, i can't wear heels, i'd probably wobble around like i'm on stilts. xD

I will always think it's ridiculous people say "Never judge a book by its cover!" and that's all you see people doing.

We say "looks do not matter" but it's not true.
There are plenty of clothing styles I would NEVER wear, even if those clothes were wonderfully sewn and they fit me to perfection. Just because I don't feel ME in those styles.
So looks do matter to me.
And other people see what you are showing and of course they categorize you into what that style means for them. It's just natural.

You want a professional look, you need a clean cut image as Hotarla said.
You want a more close look, you need a more casual image.

Imho the "never judge a book by its cover" is still valid, but it does not refer to that.
It means that you should not associate looks with prejudiced assumptions regarding those looks.
People with poor looks are NOT criminals, for example.
People with glasses are NOT always smarter.
That kind of stuff.

Yeah I agree with Anura’s definition of “not judging a book by its cover”. It’s more along the lines of “don’t stereotype ppl just on the way they look” and not about how they dress.

I guess the whole “looks don’t matter” really depend on the situation and the location. Because really, at home “looks don’t matter” to me lol.

I don't know, I still don't like that you have to look a certain way just to get a job.
And I've felt this way for years and my opinion will not change xD
