DoS??? ...or just a maintenance (edit by Firn)

Hi people,

you will have probably noticed that our site was down most of last night. Our hoster's support person said the database connection from our site had been cut bacause a DoS protection script had cut in. :qstr:

We're not quite sure yet if this occured because of so many of you being on the site at once, or it was really a flooding DoS attack on kofk. We will have to wait and see if it happens again... :qwor:

Sorry about the downtime, but we're back in business now.
:qw:

Edit by Firn: As the problem kept persisting and it happened again tonight, I contacted the host's support service myself and for some reason they told me something completely different.
According to the message I got as reply they are going through necessary server maintenance which causes the site to be down.

So, looks like they have NO CLUE what they are doing/saying...

Let's see and wait what happens...

I'm having weird page alignment issues since it happened. Instead of the "Forum, Wardrobe, Shops, Games, Paypal" options being right under the top banner, there's a huge space between them. Also, the front page doesn't work well, I had to reload and click "forums" as quickly as possible before I could navigate at all, and I don't know if this is normal or something I just noticed, but when viewing a topic, the little box under my avatar with the logout and foodpoints is halfway down the page.

I don't think there is a "fix" for something like a DoS attack. There are prevention measurements but it's our host who handles these things, not us. ^^,

Starkad didn't mention it in his announcement, but there is nothing we can do.
It's our host who shut down the site to protect them from the (possible) attack and not us and the support person said that they'll keep an eye on this.

Nothing else but watching is what they are doing against it right now. :qsl:

No. A permanent Denial Of Service attack can damages a system so badly that it requires replacement or reinstallation of hardware. That's the reason why our provider has the security system that shuts down our site completely. But that's the worse thing that can happen next to the site not being accessible.
But it's not a "hack", it doesn't take over a site or do anything to your account.
