I don't have experience with free software but I've seen some professionals using Krita, so that's one suggestion ^^'

I hope it works out for you! I've recently tried Medibang on my ipad and liked it, so if you don't like Krita I would try Medibang too.

I use autodesk sketchbook. It gives me some nice smooth lines. You can download it on desktop/lap top or tablets.
