From The Book of Questions by Gregory Stock.
Question #20: If you knew of a way to use your estate, following your death, to greatly benefit humanity, would you do it and leave only a minimal amount to your family?

Greatly is a bit vague. If it could cure world hunger or a desease, I probably would, but other than that, maybe only if I knew that my family is well enough to not need my estate. Otherwise I don't think I could leave them without anything.

*snort* I have an estate now? Yeah, right.... there's going to be maybe barely enough to cover funeral costs.

I agree that it would have to be a pretty big and important benefit to humanity. I mean, I don't actually have anything. But, if I did, I guess I might be willing to not leave anything to my family if it meant curing cancer or something.

I don't think anyone is that much of a filantropist. Even Nobel only did that cuz he had a guilty conscience.

I have been called an Altruist before, so I would probably like to help as many people as I could.
I'm already an organ donor. I don't need my organs if I'm dead, so I want to help as many others as possible.
But I'd also want my family to live comfortably.
Soooooo it depends on the amount for both xD;

This is easy for me because I know my family will be well off even if I die, and I don't intend on marrying or having children. So yes, gladly.

I would help my family while I'm alive and leave money to help humanity for after I die.
I can see this scenario as really happening.. Its not something I've really thought of before, though.
I owe my family, but I have no children at 30 years old and am still not married. If this keeps up, I won't have family to pass money to except for the children of my cousins, because my siblings don't [and won't] have kids either. =o
I really care about the state of the world, and I would like to see humanity progress, so if I can help that along, that would be one thing I'd like to do with my life, or death, even.

I feel like this is a hard question for me to answer seriously, because it tries to be practical and personal in application of an abstract principle, kind of, but the circumstances of my life would have to be very different for this to actually be a personally and practically applicable question.... which makes it hard to answer personally and practically, since at that point, well, I'd be a different person. If that made any sense at all.
