self conscious about personal taste?

i'm thinking about music specifically, but it applies to everything. my peers and i have a completely different taste in music (and a few other things as well) and sometimes it's a little alienating, but more than that i sometimes get the feeling some of my peers are judging me for my tastes.

i don't care about if people think i have "bad" taste, but what bothers me more is the idea that i have "pretentious" taste... does that make any sense? like, it just bothers me that people think i might have some kind of elitist attitude judging by my taste in things.

i mean, i do care a lot about music and i read/watch reviews, browse music forums, stuff like that. i guess it's more that my habits align me more closely to anons on /mu/ even though i'm not really of that crowd whatsoever. i guess it's a weird thing to notice - i'm not really THAT concerned or anything, but it's just a thought.

what things do you feel self conscious about with your taste?

Nah
I know what I like and don't like. If it aligns with others, whatever. If it doesn't, also whatever

Heheh, anons on /mu/ were how I recently got sucked into vaporwave. :mcheh:

I am pretty self-conscious about what I like/am interested in, mostly because once two of my friends sorted out what I liked, they can now guess EXACTLY what I will like from every show, every time. I like what I like and I stick to it, I suppose?

Anyway, I also feel awkward about not liking things I "should" like. I have one of those personalities where if everyone is going crazy about some show/song/etc. and I didn't stumble across it before the hype, I will instinctively recoil from watching it until the hype dies down. Which makes me sound like some kind of hipster...but I really have trash taste, tbh. Which would be just what a hipster in denial would say! :mcargh:

I can't think of any of my likes that I'm self-conscious about. I like what I like, and I like all my likes! If other people don't like what I like or make assumptions about me based on what I like, that's not my problem!

I seem to like a lot of things people think are bad or terrible.
Usually movies.
I don't care, but when I see so many people thinking it sucks, I question myself xD

I used to be afraid to let people know I read, draw and write BL.
They know now, and weren't bothered, but I still try to hide it xD

Your poll question had me confused about how to answer; I'm always quite certain others are judging me for my tastes -but I don't care?
I mean, I judge other people for their tastes too but it doesn't affect anything, so... why would it matter?

Like if someone says they're a huge fan of X genre, I'll make a mental note, "ask for recommendations later" or maybe "remember never to ask for recommendations" as the case may be.

But... beyond that it doesn't, well, CHANGE anything. So.... I don't see the relevance of it? I mean, I acknowledge that it happens. All the time. I do it, I expect others do it right back, but.... what practical difference does it make?

In my old age I don't give many fucks about what people think about my personal taste. lol. It's a wonderful feeling not to worry about what other people think about me.

oh, good point. i didn't realize the poll was a little oddly worded.

i think for me personally, it bothers me sometimes because i dislike that people attribute things to me that aren't true. i don't care if they think i have bad taste, but i dislike being seen as a certain stereotype based on a few facts about my interests. i dunno why that annoys me so much!

Eh, that would annoy anybody! But that's probably more about them than it is about you, that they're trying to make one small facet define all of you... it's too small a sample set to tell you anything about someone, what kind of music they like...
