It's becoming harder and harder to judge a book by its cover. Because what I've noticed is that synopses are now often replaced by a list of awards/opinions from reviewers or other authors. Which, ok, I'm happy they enjoyed reading this book but
I'd like to know what it's about
But, yeah, as pretty much everyone here has said before me: title, cover, synopsis, first chapter. It's not a foolproof plan but it usually works. Sometimes my friends suggest books to me. I study literature and sometimes I like the author so much I decide to read more.

I usually end up choosing a book by reading the back of it or hearing a bit about the story and becoming intrigued. Or, it's a favorite author and I don't care what it is about and will read it no matter what. Like Margaret Atwood for example. I will read literally ANYTHING she writes because she is a friggin genius.

I go over several books the one that makes me feel interested gets opened, then I read the first and the last paragraph. If I want to know what happened between the two moments I'll buy it. :}

I pick my books by reading the synopsis on the back. I used to be pretty bad when I was younger and only buying books if I knew the author. So although I had a pretty large collection of books, the vast majority were all by the same people. Now that I'm older although I still have favourite authors, when I go into a book shop now I'll usually buy something from an author I know and like as well as picking something new. It's been a pretty fun way to expand my collection and I've read some great books that ordinarily I would never have picked.

I always go straight for the summary and if that interests me, I see if the cover is anything good. It usually doesn't matter much though, I just love designs and stuff like that, hahaha.

I like how some books look as well and may buy them for that reason too BUT if I am REALLY not interested in reading any of the book at all then probably won't buy it in that case.

By the author or something that is interesting to me. Although picking a book about a certain subject is always a nice idea. Reading is relaxing.

It is very relaxing. It's one of my favorite ways to forget about my own personal stress or issues.

You know, lately I've been picking books based on what people are mentioning here on KofK!

I come up with ideas about something I want to learn about, and then I look for a book that can teach me more about that.
For books of the fantasy or Sci-Fi genre, I look for books that have authors or a series I am familiar with. I read a lot of the same Fantasy/Sci-fi authors.
Terry Pratchett, Douglas Adams, Piers Anthony, Steven Brust, Terry Brooks, Anne McCaffrey, Todd McCaffrey, Robert Jordan, Elizabeth Haydon, Neil Gaiman, someone like that.
Sometimes Ill pick a book based on the cover and summary.
For romance, I just pick what summary sounds the best and hope its a good book.
I do like Nora Roberts and Laura Kinsale, though.
