Server maintenance downtime scheduled for Friday [FINISHED]
Posted: Apr 15th, '09, 01:10
Hello everybody,
some of you will have noticed that we had some server problems in the last two months with sometimes rather long downtimes. I have been looking into this for some time now, and one of the causes seems to be the issue of limited file space on the server causing the mysql server to lag or entirely break down.
During the next few days, I'm going to do some maintenance work on the server, which will hopefully increase the stability of our server, since right now we're not sure if we can afford to pay for more server space or even an additional server just for the database.
The first step will be a complete database backup and cleanup of tons of logs to clean out some space for further maintenance operations, and I'm planning to do that on Friday, April 17th at around 10:00 AM UTC. This will be a complete service downtime of 1 to 2 hours.
This time frame was chosen by the fact that it will be in the middle of the night for most of our US-based users and work/school time for users in Europe. I can only guess, but I think most of our users are located in these two broader time regions, and I'm hoping to have found a time frame where most of you won't notice the downtime. Well, tell me otherwise if that's the case
I apologize in advance for any inconvenience caused, hope our services will be running more reliably afterwards.
[UPDATE]
The maintenance is done. For now.
I have to let run the server a few days with the new settings I made to decide wether to change anything more...
