(an excerpt from an rp my friend and I are doing)
‘That is a relief', Christopher thinks. His mother would never accept treasures and gold over her children, but at least she will be compensated in some form. Even now, he can still hear the pain in her voice from the morning they left. Wyatt had been the one to say goodbye with a smile on his face.
“We will visit, Mother.” An empty promise. None of them knew for sure if the Queen would let them return. But he smiled that beautiful, calming smile, the one that always soothed their mother and father.
“You must,” she said. She held Wyatt the longest, and if not for Melinda demanding attention, he was sure she would have forgotten her other children were leaving as well.
When his mother tried to kiss him goodbye, Chris turned his cheek. It was his way of protecting his heart. If he pushed her away, perhaps it would hurt less when he left.
It didn’t.
He is brought back to earth as his name falls from the Queen’s lips. He nearly shivers at the way it sounds, cold and distant, and his chest tightens with regret upon realizing he will not hear his mother’s affectionate voice call for him anymore. How foolish he was to push her away.
Furthermore, whatever ease he may have felt at knowing his family would be better off is now destroyed under the weight of his prince’s insouciance. This is a disaster. The queen is as icy as he’d feared, and his prince could not possibly be more disinterested. He cannot even be bothered to feel insulted as she comments on his clothes. A new tunic will not make him look less plain. He does not belong here. He will always be out of place.
All three of them flinch as the prince is reprimanded, but it is Melinda who lets out a soft whine. Wyatt has still not let go of her hand - or rather, it is Melinda who will not let his go - but he squeezes it now in an attempt to keep her quiet. It does not work.
“I do not want Chris to go,” she complains. Chris’ eyes widen and he looks to her now, a burst of adrenaline coursing through his veins. He can see it in Wyatt’s eyes as well - fear that she will be punished for speaking out. Neither of them respond, not at first, but when Melinda begins to cry again, Wyatt turns to hold her.
Chris can hear him murmuring soft reassurances, but he is unable to make out the words. 'She will be fine with him', he thinks. 'Wyatt will take care of her.'

Caw, caw, caw, Mr. Crow says. I don't know what I was expecting. I smile at him, sort of, to be polite, and then look away - inward, I guess, to where people are shifting and murmuring. One guy groans and starts counting the stitches on his knitting needle, one, two, three, loud and exaggerated in a sort of passive-aggressive way (which everyone says is a Seattle thing but I always figured was just more of a secretly-an-asshole thing) while not looking at whomever made the bus brake, up in front - someone with dark hair and a dark jacket, so basically like half the kids in my poetry class. (My jacket is white and puffy and makes me look like the marshmallow man.) I look down, too (but more like for the crow - to be polite) and watch the floor, instead - greenish, and striped with yellow warning lines (do not cross do not cross do not), and stained with these weird white marks that look almost like chalk dust.
