You were lucky then, I don't think I ever saw them for sale!

Oh, they weren't, I just put up a thread asking and there were some very kind people who were willing to trade. This site is amazing in the way it welcomes newcomers.
I probably wouldn't have stuck around but for all of the welcoming people here.
Moi probably doesn't even remember but she sent me a trade my very first week with miscellaneous stuff including an item from a treasure trove set.
There were a whole slew of people, really! Mem helped me with my first quests, back when I had no knuffels to dig with.
I think it was Kitalpha who warned me that I had to buy my trial knuffel BEFORE the trial period expired or it would disappear (I thought it would do a "do you want to buy this knuffel?" thing at the end of the time, and her warning kept my baby Earth knuffel from disappearing for good)
I can't even name everyone, but there were a lot!

I think I should try digging with some functionals boosting my chance of finding food, because so far I've tried digging without any such boosts and had no luck digging food.

@Li Li:
Now that I mention it, I should include a line about the trial knuffel suddenly disappearing in my little guide...
@Mynah:
If you are digging for food, it's always better doing so in the element in which the knuffel has the worst statistics.

Oooh I didn't know that! What if it's at zero in one element? Is that the best element in which to make it dig for food?

Well, the minimum is 1, but yes, that would be the best one.
The number shows the probability of finding materials and items. So 1 is only a 1% chance.
If you don't find any material, then you have an small chance of finding FPs. It's like a compensation prize.
So if they dig in an element with a level 100 or above, there is a 100% chance of finding a material and therefore it's impossible to find FPs.

Ooooh! Now I know why I never dug up food lol! I should train some Knuffel a little in other elements.

Or simply dig in what you have not leveled them up.
I usually don't dig for FPs, but when sometimes I feel like doing it I just go for any element in which they are at bare level 1.

Yep yep, what Amura said.
Also I think it's entirely a subjective thing and not real at all, but it always feels like I find more

when I dig in the Frostland Coast (water area) than anywhere else.
Really not sure why.
Pretty sure it isn't real.
But now I'm totally superstitious about it and go there when I want food. (Except for the levelled-up-in-water knuffel, of course)

Maybe you have some of those fountains (functional room item) and don't remember about them?
That would definetely set bigger chances in water.
