Yeah, they all come from the same story universe, so there's a heavy emphasis in all the sub-stories toward physical combat and dangerous magic and the usual grimdark business. I've tried on occasion to write different genres or different universes, but they all somehow just go creeping back to that main universe...like, suddenly character X from the main universe is here! And oh no, now everything's gone terribly wrong and instead of having the, like, YA or romance or slice-of-life genre story I started out with, I just have the same thing I usually write with a bit of the other genre left in. That's how I ended up with a bunch of detectives running around the main canon, I believe, lol.

Writers should try to mix things up, I think, but I don't think I, as a writer, am ready to go whole-heartedly off down that road yet. I don't feel excited about writing things outside of my main universe. I think that's my brain telling me I really ought to finish writing this canon first.

Do you write in a lot of different universes? Or just have a handful of main canons/universes?

I have a couple of universes and seem to enjoy creating new ones, rather than expanding those I already have. Either way, my genre's always been fantasy, so I've about three or four worlds I use a little more often than others to best fit that.

There's ME-65-XX, which is my oldest world (in terms of when I first created it) and it's of the modern-fantasy variety. DI-34-HP has a Ghibli whimsical-fantasy feel with some darker undertones; RY-80-EC is similar but less dark. These two worlds are closely connected and many people have traveled from one to the other, canonically. The latter also has an alternate universe (version b) which is slightly more modern. Last is RO-52-KO, which is very fairytale European folklore-esque. And these are the four main worlds I tend to write for.

I totally feel you on moving characters from one universe to another. I actually do that a lot. XD

I'm in a fairy tale mood, but I can't seem to focus on one Fairy Tale to write in my style. So far I have a version of Snow White and Rose Red, a version of Little Red Riding Hood, and now I'm thinking of a version of Jack and the Giant or Jack the Giant killer and a Snow Queen. >>; I have waayy too much on my mind.

But I'm also in a super good mood. Besides the presents from the family, Batman is getting gifts from two adopt-a-families one was a friend of my sister-in-law and the other from school, and a CPS lady who helps out now and then is getting her some gifts. This kid is making out like a bandit. And her God mother wants to try and get her something too.

Oh, those are all good fairy tales!

I've written a few stories that were influenced by fairy tales, and some that ended up having parallels to fairy tales as well. From the top of my head, they are the following:

- Heer Halewijn, which was a folk tale about a wicked fairy lord (it is part of the story, but the tale itself is not the focal point).

- Hansel and Gretel, which again was a retold story set in a character's past. (In my version, the adult Gretel has become a witch, and Hansel is dead.)

-The Gingerbread Man, which was not entirely fleshed out and didn't follow the story so much as it was about a person created out of bread.

-The Twelve Dancing Princesses became a theme and fairy tale retelling for a character of mine as well. The same character also pulled themes and tones from Prince Caspian and Arthurian legends as well as the general tone of folklore, myths, and fairy tales.

-The White Cat, which is similar to Beauty and the Beast was another tale that influence a story.

-Rapunzel was one that I eventually realized was a correlation to mine, so there are references to it throughout the story. It became a circular sort of telling where the "prince" (prince role in the fairy tale; my character's not royalty) became trapped in his own metaphorical tower, and also was a witch. In a sense, there was someone who eventually broke down his walls, and he got a happily ever after.


Could you tell me a bit about your fairy tales, if you have any outlines for them?


Oh, I'm glad you're in a good mood! I remember those two programs --congrats to Batman! I hope she enjoys them. I sometimes forget how important gift-getting is to kids. I gave gifts to the kids for our church event (not planned; I just had a lot of leftover candy sleighs) and they were pretty happy with getting them. It made me want to actively plan to get them gifts for next year.


I had an awesome day today too! My work had their Christmas party today, and we ended up just doing easy work and decorating the workplace. My boss got me a knitted hat (which I gave to my mom 'cause it's not my style) and socks from my manager, and a coworker gave me a candy cane and a lotto ticket (which I will give to my uncle 'cause I don't really gamble). My coworker also gave me a gift card and card to a pearl tea place we always go together. I didn't expect gifts from people at work, so it was a nice surprise.

We also had a nice lunch (turkey and sides) and I got to go out to buy some Christmas decorations and stop by Starbucks. We decorated the place pretty well, and I also did a bit of actual work on the side, but my coworker friend and I spent the majority of it making Pokemon stickers. He's an animation student, and he drew Pokemon and I traced and colored them on blank sticker paper. I picked swadloon and snorlax; he picked lapras and horsea. Thinking about it, he picked blue water Pokemon, and I picked comfortable Pokemon. XD I wonder what that means...

After work, I went walking with my friend, and ended up doing some unexpected Christmas shopping. A collector's store we went to has some One Piece merch which my friend thought would make a good gift for her brother and I thought would be nice for a White Elephant gift. We couldn't find the price tag on some of the randomized toy boxes (like capsule toys but box-style), and the guy selling it said that if we bought all 7 boxes that were left, he'd sell it to us for $5 each. We found out later each box was worth ten, and since I bought six and my friend bought one, we made off like bandits! I opened my boxes sans one and it looks like I got one of each character except for three (Luffy, Usopp, and Nami). I'm thinking of going back to the store tomorrow and picking another White Elephant gift, so that I can just open the one box I'd saved.

We also stopped by a small market-like store, where I bought gifts for my mom and aunt, whose birthdays were in two months. I bought a Totoro lamp for my mom, and a Doraemon lamp for my aunt, since they liked those characters. Another two friends had also texted an invite for tacos in the meantime, so we met up for $1 taco Tuesday!

We also walked to a tea place afterwards. It was such a nice day.

Edit 2: After showing my mom my new figurines, I ended up talking to her about Oda and One Piece for one and a half hours. XD;

Wow, so many festive things! I spent all of yesterday driving back home for Christmas break, feels...weird. I used to live in my parents' basement (I know right) and even though my father goes down there a lot, not a single item has moved an inch since I left five months ago. Nothing. It's sort of eerie. But at least I now know where all the stuff I was looking for after moving is...it's exactly where I left it, lol.

I've never written anything based on a fairy tale, but I've used fairy tale characters in stories. Mostly just Baba Yaga, Koschei the Deathless, and Ded Moroz and Snegurochka. (Only Ded Moroz is mostly just the embodiment of winter instead of anything festive. There's other seasons floating around too.) Sometimes things they do will be similar to things they do in fairy tales, but a lot of things are also separate and just related to my OCs' world.

Well with Snow White and Rose Red I changed it to Rose Red and Night Ebony. Rose Red is, of course, a red head with light skin. And Night Ebony has black hair and dark skin. And yes they're mixed chromosome twins. When their mother passes away the father remarries and she is a wicked woman. When she gets pregnant with the king's child she wants to give her child the entire kingdom, but the king wants to divide the kingdom amongst all three. Well his new wife doesn't like that so she lies to the girls saying they're a burden on their father so they leave. They're like ten at this point. They go deep into a forest without realizing they entered the neighboring kingdom's land. There they find a empty cottage and make it their home. Later when moving a flower so they can grow a garden a witch appears and changes Rose Red into a barn swallow (who can still talk) and the witch gives Night Ebony a yarn to make into a tunic for her sister in order to turn her back. Well the yarn keeps unraveling every time Night Ebony gets close. Then they meet a stranger, who only appears during the evening. Another part of the story will be like The White Bear King Valemon.

Little Red Riding Hood has a twist. There are werewolves in this story.

The Jack and the Beanstalk and Jack the Giant Killer is the same guy. Anyways I decided to focus on the giants. Now that the king is dead their neighboring enemy is going to war on them. Because the king was powerful enough to control them and now he's dead. His daughter is taking over, but no one wants to take orders from a girl, so some of her people are trying to marry her off to the top ranking men in the army, but she doesn't want to marry.

And I haven't figured out the Snow Queen idea yet.

It's cool, I still live at home with my parents. Though our basement is no place to live. It's a dirt basement and it's small.

I tried not to do fairy tales, but ended up doing so anyways. lol

Aha, nice! We don't (usually) have basements where I'm from, but I did live in an apartment loft for a while. It was with my family, but the exact family members were always changing (our family had lived there for over 20 years).

I don't mind if a series is long, because I feel like I'm always looking for something entertaining to watch/read anyways, and as long as I enjoy it, I'll keep at it. I don't think much of the anime anymore because they keep adding filler try and keep in pace with the manga (and who needs five minutes of a character just running around or throwing punches?), but I still watch it when I want background noise while doing something else. Even though I don't understand much Japanese, at least I still get something from it because I read the manga, aha.

Another reason I keep at it is because my brother and I grew up watching it together. When I was younger, I enjoyed Naruto more, but I began converting over to One Piece and lost interest in Naruto a while after the time skip.
One Piece kept my interest because it was something my brother and I could continue to bond over. I also admire the manga-ka. His art haa always been animated with a lot of personality and interesting expressions/body language. He takes the time to flesh out both his characters (even many of his side characters get backstories, have story updates on chapter covers, and they meet up and form relationships with each other and new people). He takes the time to flesh out his world (we learn about communities and cultures; he pulls from real-world cultures and lore, and he constantly communicates real world issues through his stories). Oda is also a person who seems to be very enthusiastic and sincere in his craft; he works hard, but also enjoys what he does. His notes and open communication to his fans have given me reason to think that he's pretty optimistic, that he's good-natured, that he's kind to his fans and those he works with. He seems like a really great guy.


Nothing wrong with doing fairy tales, though. I mean, stories are influenced by others, be it fictional or life experiences. We shape our stories from what we know.

No, but I wanted to go with that. I think that's what it's called when one child is one race and the other is the other race. Their mother was white and their father was black. However the new child will be Milano (not sure if that's the appropriate name anymore) and will have the mother's blue eyes so she'll be named Sky Blue.
Oh yeah! The king looked for them but couldn't find them. And he couldn't go far into the forest because after a point it's the other king's property and it was late and couldn't get permission and by the time he could get permission they missed the area they were as the split up search party all assumed the other had checked that area. Then his new wife distracts him with the new baby.
And after awhile she does convince him they must have been eaten by wild animals.

I don't mind if it's reasonably long, but if it goes past 20 mangas, that's it for me. Well except Yu Yu Hakusho, that could have lasted forever for me. XD I wish PhD: Phantasy Degree had lasted longer than 10 mangas.

My mom loves Naruto. And Bleach, and Case Closed. She has more mangas though.

Aye, my best bud is a fantastic artist! I love the pose she picked. She's actually going to do a set with our personas (we both have a male and female each), but it's going slow because she's busy and we haven't decided on outfits.

Ah, yeah, I used to read a lot of fairy tales, folklore, and myths as a kid and young adult. I just read a lot of fiction in general, and those of the more fictional and fantasy nature just really stuck with me. I remember really enjoying "La Sylphide" and "Giselle", even though they were ballet tales. I also listened to the Nutcracker as a kid before bed, and my parents often read and told me stories.

Swan Lake is an interesting story. I'd like to see more retellings of it (sans that Black Swan movie). The Twelve Dancing Princesses will always be a favorite of mine. I think it'd work very well if the story was more fleshed out. I like how some versions had the soldier marrying the older sister, and some had him marrying the younger sister.

"The Girl Without Hands" is also another interesting fairy tale. I think someone incorporated the story into their fairy tale web comic, but said comic has been dropped. Still, it was the first time I heard of it, and I thought it was interesting!

"The Snow Queen" often reminds me of the witch from "the Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe" for some reason, aha. Maybe it's because there are similar themes.

Aha, yes, that is very well put, Februarybabe, and I've never thought of it that way! You know, I once got into a fandom ship by just reading a random fanfic (it was a top listed one on a site, so I gave it a shot). It turns out that many of the fanfics for the series seemed to flesh out the characters just as well as the canon, and since certain aspects of the show (it's Teen Wolf) went in the direction of Supernatural (killing or making love interests evil, gay baiting), I just stuck with the fandom but not the series itself.

Aha, that name reminds me of a little girl I know. Her name is Fahsai (in Thai it means "Clear Sky"). When her mom was pregnant with her, I suggested that she give her the nickname "Skye" so that it would be easier to pronounce, but her mom wasn't for it. XD;

Did the king wonder why they had left?

I wasn't a fan of YYH, but I do like Hunter x Hunter, which was done by the same manga-ka. You can see a lot of influence in HxH from YYH. You also catch a bit of Sailor Moon influence as well, since his wife is the crator for that series.

What's PhD about?

I would've liked if Baccano was given another couple seasons. It was adapted from a light novel, and what was adapted was great. (The same writer also made the more popular Durarara! which was good, but didn't snag me in the same way.)

My mom isn't an anime fan, but she'll watch them with me if I show them to her. We've watched Hikaru no Go, Oofuri, and Ghibli stuff together. She likes Totoro.
