Disgaea games are like.... really classic sprite turn based strategy games. Like, you have a grid and characters can move x amount of squares. Certain weapons and magics can hit x amount of squares or in a cross pattern etc. etc. Has a very high replay value with skill caps.

Characters can go to level 9,999. A multitude of classes to be played. And each class can re-incarnate to a better version of their class (or an entirely different class; ie: you could have a sniper that also uses magic). Classes usually have 5 versions. But they can re-incarnate more than 5 times.

But they just. Oh my god. The stories are so good. And they usually have cameos of all previous characters. Be it hidden bosses, unlockable characters, mention in passing, DLC, etc.

Just watch some gameplays or trailers. I love this series. They also have a game that isn't in the direct Disgaea line called Makai Kingdom, but again, same functions. But in this one you pushed souls in to things like rocks to create new characters. Really interesting.

And then I think the game you MIGHT be referring to, Rubiekins, is Cross Edge? I have that one, and lots of Disgaea characters (it's supposed to be a NIS wide game) make cameos.
