I dunno how to explain it. I just think of a story or in this case a theme: Superheroes/villains and then I figure how I want them to look like.

Aha, you can do it in all sorts of different ways. Sometimes I start with art first and then the background comes, but mostly I would word-build then put the character together.

They're yours no matter what. You brought them to life. You can control them and manipulate their story.

I don't feel like I'm controlling or manipulating the character, so much as they are creating themselves and guiding me through their lives. I work on their worlds and how they came to be, but I can't force them to be something that they aren't, and I wouldn't want to. I still believe they belong to me, because a small part of me is reflected in them, that sorta thing.

Make up stories for them. I'm a writer, so that's the route I usually take, but some people prefer to use them for drawing. My current one, Ara, is in an art group on DA, and everyone who has an OC there writes and draws together.

I can control whether my characters live or die, whether they fall in love or cheat on their love. It's all my choosing. I can't see being "guided through their lives" since they can't do anything unless I write it up. And I get to choose all that. But that's me.
I love to make up bios about my characters (if I can remember to do so). Give them life and make up a world for them to live and interact with others in. I'm working on Superheroes/villains. Sans story, because for the life of me I'm not sure I can write about a fight scene in detail. lol xD Or as much detail needed. I have yet to get passed: "And they fought a vicious battle. There were lots of blows and kicks. And blasts of their powers." Yeah that's exciting. XD *epic fail*
