Aaargh, this is reminding me that I have a lot of garden stuff to take care of for the real-world spring, since it's getting rather late to be planting but if I want to get any basil in this year, now is the time.

Yeah...
I need more compost, darn it.
(There are a lot of mature evergreens around my place, and they're kind of jealous plants. They don't much like anything growing too near them, but if I amend the soil I can usually get annuals to do pretty decently... kinda. Enough. But I have to keep adding and we just don't have that much food waste to make enough compost in my house....)

What's your favorite kind of basil?
I really like licorice basil for just randomly eating a leaf of, but I don't cook with it at all. Mostly I cook with Genovese (which is SUPER common here), and then use Mammoth Leaf or Lettuce Leaf basil for when I am going to use it raw in a dish.
(side note:
I know a lot of people cook with Thai basil, but I like to use it in cooking more as a main ingredient than as a spice, and if you use it that way, the Thai basil is too strong. So I need a milder one. If you're going to put several cups of leaves into a soup or baked dish, you can't use Thai basil. It would get overpowering.)

Mine has been growing in a pot and has been doing well for more than 6 months.
