You got it directly from the author? Wow! I didn't realize there were many authors on the site itself.
Maybe I should give it another go...

there are a lot of authors on goodreads! they're holding giveaways and communicating with readers
technically the book I'll be reviewing is in free access. the deal is, if I write a review and want to read on, I'll get the second book in the series for free.
you could try if you feel like :)

After winning a giveaway once, the author PMed me, and we got talking, and she was really nice, so then I left a little bit of a better review than I would have otherwise!

Aha, lol, now I see why the authors are doing it. ;)
Really though, the thought of adding my books to the bookshelf thing there is daunting. If I try it again, it won't be soon!

imo it's only fair. an author is a brand. you get expectations. I just think what's very important to keep in mind is that you're not writing reviews for an author. they've already gotten all the feedback they could have incorporated. reviews are for readers. how is the book paced? are there disturbing moments? is it a nice spinoff or a cliche? writing a false review will not make the author happier, it'll attract wrong readers. who may in turn leave negative reviews. in the end no one wins. I'm so thankful to people who leave 4 stars rating but write in detail what they didn't like. thanks to them I found books that were right for me. trying to review like this too, but I'm often nicer than I should be. good thing we can edit our reviews.
@Akili: maybe just don't rush it. add stuff slowly.
or not XD
if you decide to join, I'll be happy to add you as a friend too. compatibility checks are fun!

I'm squeamish, so my reviews are often based on parental guidelines/trigger warnings.
To add books, type in the title, then click "Read," or "To read," or "Currently reading," or whatever shelf you want to put it in. It's easy, but it's time consuming if you want to add a lot of things at once!

I've had door-to-door people literally mistake my house for a bookstore.
To give you an idea of the scope.
So, yes. Daunting. And time consuming.

Haha, then yes, setting up your bookshelves will take quite a while! You can do it slowly though!

I've never seen setting bookshelves as a chore. if I suddenly remember I'd read a book, I'll add it. but most of the books I've read are not on my lists. I only do it as long as it's fun. for instance, there's an option to compare bookshelves with other users. during this process the site will also ask you about books that aren't on your lists, so you can add them then if you want. I mostly don't because I mostly haven't read anything XD
