I use Goodreads. There you got other peoples opinions and the summary. Great website!

Normally I wander around the book store or library reading titles, pick up one that sounds interesting, read the first few pages, and if I like it I keep reading. This is how I have found most of my favorite books.

I get recommendations from friends, People magazine, and just look for books that seem interesting. Lately I've been reading books I want to read vs. books I think I should read, and it has been a lot of young adult vampire fiction mainly, biographies, etc.

I go by Amazon reviews and the first few pages from the Look Inside feature...and the cover, because even if you shouldn't judge a book by its cover, I definitely do.

If I'm at a bookstore I end up looking at covers and reading the synopsis. I do initially judge books by the cover. I'm a bit of a base idiot about it. Pretty covers attract me.
Actually buying a book usually requires having input from someone that it's good. If I've seen favorable reviews I'll check it out, too. As quick as I am to look at a pretty book I'm very skeptical. I've been burned in the past. Burned bad. Third degree.

I'll find someone who recommends books I liked, and read other books they recommend. If Wikipedia has an article on a book or author, I'll read it first. Sometimes I'll find related books/authors on Wikipedia too.

I'm currently working through some of the recommendations here: http://uriel.cat-v.org/profile

Sometimes I'll use Amazon's recommendations. Others, a simple search for the subject material. A great cover will get me everytime. Yes, I'm THAT cliche.... :D
