You're a waitress at the local diner.

You run a for-profit animal shelter; you mostly make funding from the various animal-cafes associated with the shelter. There are some "full time employee" animals who are well socialized mascots of the cafes, and then there are the rotating adoptable stars who come through in shifts. You also take money from some of the local veterinary schools, bringing in all the cases to them during set hours for teaching-operations or for simple hands-on practice by the students for more common things like deworming.
When the shelter is not full, you take on paying borders from pet owners who can't bring their companions along on trips, and have a regular troop of "performing" animals that go around doing local displays and shows at varying events which are half educational and half entertainment.
You also get sponsorship from pet supply chains, and one employee is in charge of a daily livestream that focuses on the animals.
It's a lot of work, but you not only keep the shelter open, you manage to make a living doing it!
