I think I wouldn't count manga because I read them too quickly?
Maybe if I finished a series. But you're right, you set your own criteria!
I'm reading a 25-chapter fic right now and considered whether or not I should count that.
I'm not going to. I feel like it's slightly different, haha, though I couldn't explain why.

@Julez
Milk and Honey by Rupi Kaur.
I wouldn't mind reading more poetry books.

Those are some intense reads! I never read Percy Jackson or the Narnia books.
Well, I read the first one (Narnia) sometime in elementary school, but forgot it.
I would love to read a book like that, though, about America from the indigenous pov.
I read a few pieces in a literature class and it was honestly so eye-opening.
But there you go! You've got it all lined up, haha. I wish you luck! (:

I'm in the middle of reading Les Miserables and Man in the Iron Mask.
Les Mis is a huge read so it's taken me years to get anywhere in it.
I have Man in the Iron Mask on my phone, free to read, but the transcription
of it is poorly made. Grammar and spelling errors everywhere.
I also have to wonder if the translation wasn't done well in places?
It's a shame. I might invest in the whole Musketeers series in paper if I can.
Considering, you know, Man in the Iron Mask is just a small part of a much larger story,
I feel like I should invest in the whole thing.
It's kind of silly of me to jump into the story later on, but I've always wanted
to read that story in particular because I loved the movie adaptation so much
and wanted to see how different it was, haha.

Right, everyone sets one's own criteria :3

Hmm, "Milk and Honey" somehow rings a bell.... But dunno.
I am very curious about Percy Jackson, I love the movies, especially the first one, and I was very sad to find out they most likely won't continue the series.. :( I hate if movies stop in the middle of the story... *rages*

I don't know if you ever read something by Tolkien. I've read "The Hobbit" (in German though) and, in my opinion, Tolkien and Lewis are pretty much alike in their writing style. They were actually friends in real life and influenced each other a lot. I think they are both difficult to read though. They are VERY detailed in their descriptions. On top of that, Lewis wanted to express his religious views in the Narnia series (Aslan being God). Oh well. That's probably why I took a break from it. And with Narnia primarly being written for children it's even a little harder because the language is pretty simple. But I would still recommend reading it, it's classic literature.

And yes, this book also opened my eyes a little more, as did the American History class I took about 2 semesters ago.

Les Miserables never interested me, at least the movie. But who knows, maybe I'll take a look at it some time later one.
Man in the Iron Mask rings a bell as well.... What does it have to do with The Musketeers? I like the movie with Orlando Bloom and Logan Lerman (also playing Percy), but many consider it rather bad. :D
Anyway, I've read "The three musketeers" by Alexandre Dumant. It was a long read, but totally worth it. Different from the stories conveyed in the movies, but still very nice :3

I love the Les Miserables movies. I read a shortened version of the book and liked that too. I have not attempted to tackle the full version yet.

I read The Man in the Iron Mask years ago because I liked the movie. Never read any of the other books.

Still haven't read Narnia but definitely intend to.

I thought the Percy Jackson movies had done pretty well,
but maybe they weren't really turning a profit?
I feel like people were always talking about them, though.

I haven't read Tolkien yet, but I'm sure I will at some point.
I've actually heard that they were friends! I love that, haha.
That's true though, if the language is geared more toward children it might
be a little harder to invest in ... but I'd like to give them a shot at some point, anyway.
I wonder how different that is in English compared to German ... never read in German. :u

I had only seen the Les Miserables movie, and I loved it, so I bought the book
without really considering that a) it's incredibly long and b) the descriptions go on and on.
Part of me loves older stories where they explain everything in unnecessary detail,
because I love the language used, but part of me also wishes they'd get to the point, haha.

Well, Man in the Iron Mask, as far as the stories go, is a tale that appears
like twenty years after the events of The Three Musketeers? Or something like that.
There was a movie starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Jeremy Irons, among other big names.
It's one of my all-time favorites from childhood.
I always thought it was a direct sequel of the 1993 "The Three Musketeers" movie. It's not, haha.

      @San
I didn't realize they released a shortened version of Les Mis!
I imagine they cut out all the long explanations.
I've read so much that doesn't seem important to the story ...

Yes, I really enjoyed the shortened version!

I read Anna Karenina a couple years ago. It was so long, and the print was tiny, and so much of the book really really really didn't need to be there in my opinion!

I feel like I've heard Anna Karenina was like that. D:
I couldn't get into the movie, personally.

Sometimes with old books, once you get past all the long-winded explanations
there's a really amazing story behind it, haha.
It's just so hard to get past how slow they can be ...

I loved the Anna Karenina movie, but I thought the book was a bit of a chore! Lots of farming debates that I didn't care about at all if I remember correctly.

Jane Eyre and Nicholas Nickleby were the same for me - loved the movies, thought the books were way too long and kind of meh!

Sometimes I like the book better, but sometimes I like the movie better because they edited all the garbage out of the book, especially with the old books!

              That's a good point!
Most of the time it seems like movies take too much out,
but for stories like that I guess it would be a smart move.

I know with some old stories they take the creative liberty to change the plot around, though.
Sometimes that works and sometimes it doesn't, haha.
I end up usually just keeping the movie adaptations and the original stories separate,
and appreciate them as two different pieces of art.

I agree with everything you guys said!
Sometimes I feel rather sad if I notice that there are parts missing in the movies which appeared in the books though. That's why I usually watch the movies first before I read the book if I know that I wanna read it someday beforehand.
It worked with Harry Potter actually. I first saw the movies and read the books afterwards and I love both whereas some people say the movies miss out on so many things, especially from the 4th part on. I see that now as well of course, but I do not mind.

Really? People talk about Percy Jackson? I barely know sb who speaks about it and if it is the case it's mostly negative. But I don't care, I love it 8) It's a typical Sunday movie for me.

Usually the translaters can do their job quite well and also adapt to the style of the original author, so I guess it does not make much difference whether one reads Tolkien in German or English. But reading sth in its original language is better, of course.
Yea, go ahead and try Narnia, you have nothing to lose :3

Oh no, I hate books with long passages which basically have nothing to do with the story and which are too detailed :/ I even had my problems with Pride and Prejudice at some point, but I loooooved the book. Same counts for Wuthering Heigths.

I love Pride and Prejudice, if it's the book or the BBC movie. I don't like the other movie!

                  Haven't read Wuthering Heights yet.

I just finished The Cold Dish, which is the first book in the series that the Longmire tv show is based on. I thought the show was WAY better!
