PastelWitch, what really helped me was focusing on restricting certain foods instead of counting calories. It's easier, you don't need to focus so much on amounts - but on type of foods.
I actually did a Whole30.
I don't think it's for everyone but it did help me fix recognize some of my issues with help.
I still have no self-control, but I've learned to love drinking unsweetened tea or that an abundant healthier breakfast gets me started on a better path.
