It's so strange... I keep seeing this name around and people writing things about it (mostly bad, I'm sorry fans), but I've never even seen it myself, much less heard on any mainstream media (then again I avoid all things from it like plague in these days, so...). So I finally googled it and (or the pictures really)... I don't know... Is it some Japanese thing? Kind of looks like it, or at least similar to something I saw ages ago... Well, whatever floats your boat I guess... :]

Steven Universe is a Cartoon Network program created by Rebecca Sugar.

It's an American production, not a Japanese program, but it is heavily influenced by anime--especially Revolutionary Girl Utena and the films of Hayao Miyazaki. I'm not at all surprised you thought it was Japanese. American and Japanese sequential art and animation have a long, storied, symbiotic relationship. :qh:

In terms of response to the show, the fanbase is...I dunno. I'm not really involved in the fan community surrounding this show, but I know it gets a bad rap. Since I'm not really involved, I can't speak to that with any certainty though.
In terms of critical reception though, as in the response to the show itself, it has been universally positive. In fact, Steven Universe is already one of the most successful shows in Cartoon Network history! :qh:

It's a story about a boy named Steven and his family, and their relationships and adventures. It's filled with science fiction and magic and nostalgic color schemes and beautiful songs. Not only does this show float my boat, it floats my entire fleet. :qh:

Ah. Okay. :) Although I'm not a fan, but having been part of few fandoms before in the not so distant past and having seen the madness that goes on far too often (I'd say quite literally madness), I can definitely imagine if the actual fandom life in this, well fandom, is like that as well... The internet, as great as it can be, brings together crazy and turns it into something so much worse...

As for what floats my boat, I'd say it's more often than not crime/detective/mystery shows and movies. And books and fanfiction, you name it. Even among cartoons there are few. So really it's no wonder I'm not usually aware anymore when something new(?) comes up that's not in that category. Lol. In my defence, I used to eat up anything in the past. Probably would've this too had it been around back then. So much so that it's extremely hard to please me in these days.

But float away... I'll float back into my own little mystery corner... :P

Wow--the Summer of Steven was amazing! Bismuth! Smoky Quartz! MEEP MORPS!

But I'm also excited to return to the regular schedule. It's better than another hiatus, at least!

Mindful Education just came out. It was so beautiful. :qh:

Me too! And I especially thought it was a great way to introduce young kids to the concept of mindfulness, which has been really important for me learning to cope with my anxiety. I could have really used the concept when I was a kid. Sometimes Steven Universe makes things better, you know?

It was SO GOOD! OH. MY. GOD.

Pearl was sooooooooooo cute! Too cute to handle. And I loved that moment when Steven was like, "Okay, no one's saying it, but that girl looked like Mom." Too good!

I really hope we get an episode soon about Pearl calling her--just think how anxious she would be! And then Steven would probably offer to role play with her, to get her more comfortable, and then things would get complicated.
