I wasn't that much scared of the needles, more of the idea that I could be allergic to the ink. So I think it's important to know the artist an make sure that they use the proper ink.
I understand that the needles can be scary, but maybe it can help if you find an artist that you can trust and is well recommended? And tell the artist that you are anxious about the needles. I think a good artist will know how to help their costumer relax. And perhaps bring a friend or someone who can hold your hand. I had my sister with me for my first tattoo, and I didn't feel well, but she held my hand and I made it through :D
