I've never spent more than half my paycheck in one go, with the only exception being bills + rent paid the first two months after I moved in my apt. That's only cause we still had a lot of furniture to purchase too!

I haven't either. Also except for bills/rent/etc.

Well. I guess technically I might have when I was making super shit money. I used to make only like 150 a week at one point. So if I needed to buy a lot of groceries or something then I probably spent a large amount of it.

But in this imaginary world where I could afford to go to Japan I would have known about it for a while and squirreled away a large some of money for the adventure.

I'd save up a lot.

For the food, hotels/wherever I stay at/merch.

I go on two vacations a year, once to London for MCM and once to Birmingham for TFN (both conventions). I know I always spend a lot of money on merch so I do exactly that; save up a bit every month.

My paycheck is about 1400€/month.
500€/month automatically goes to my savings at the end of each month.
350€ is my share of rent each month.
say about 200€ goes to bills for electricity/water etc and groceries (my bff and I take turns paying for the groceries)
100€/month is put away for my vacations
which leaves me with about 250€/month for my hobbies, unexpected payments or shopping etc

I always try to book my hotel and transport asap to get the cheapest prices. Merch and food is where the rest of my money disappears to c':

I refuse to stay in the cheapest kind of places though, like hostels are a no-no for me. I don't trust the kind of places that have you sharing so much space with total strangers. I have too many valuable stuff with me on vacation to let my suitcase stay in a sort of dorm where you share access with up to 10 strangers...

yeah hostel is no go for me as well for same reasons

its fine for students or people who are trekking around with just the basics. But I'm not hauling my cosplays and purchases around to just leave them in a hostel c':

I will likely buy sailor moon or ccs merch and will not want any of it stolen.

yuup merch is expensive and also at cons you can snatch some limited editions or other stuff that you just won't easily find back home and to have those stolen is extra irk.

Also I'm really not keen on shared bathrooms either c':
