The thing is, I don't actually regularly dig anywhere, so that method would just keep me from ever progressing.
When I have a quest, and I know where to dig for what I'm missing, I'll dig.
Otherwise, it's really really random and semi-rare.

Do you have an active quest now?
If you're okay with it...
Tell me what you're missing, and I'll choose water or light area based on which I think might have (or be missing) something, and do that next.

Then I can pretend I'm being helpful, and it will be motivational.

I’m missing Groundsel which I know can only be found in Light lol. Which was why I picked light first.
