Nope, its not just the battery but the battery did start the chain reaction that has my 8yo lappy suddenly acting its age :'c

It has crashed/black screened on me 4 times already in the 5h that I've noticed the battery dying (around 3pm, now 8pm). It keeps giving me pop-ups that I need to clear my C disk/software and even with a cable connected it keeps giving me a 'battery almost empty please connect to power' notification. The latter is esp weird as I have a cable connected, that I know works because my bff tried it on hers to test, and my lappy tells me I'm at 12% for give or take 2h now. I'm kind of on a constant edge right now where my laptop may or may not shut down completely on me either by black screening or power loss.

I'm typing so fast everywhere to get a message in before I see nothing but black screen xD

Not 100% sure about this but I also think I may have lost some files/programs on it? Maybe those were on my c disk or sth

I could take my laptop in somewhere to see if it can be repaired but the guarantuee is obv long over and I'm afraid the total costs may end up rivaling the price of a new laptop. Or that it ends up being a temp fix and I'm looking at years of trouble with my lappy cause it is an old thing.

I'm not looking at getting a super expensive new laptop anyway either, going to hunt for sales and it doesn't have to be the latest model for me nor gaming specs etc I just need to be able to go on the internet haha

It's not that bad, it still runs enough for me right now that I can still like browse the internet with 5 tabs open! Everything works fine until like once an hour it just suddenly doesn't and I get black screened hah. I then have to start my laptop up again with a very real chance that something literally gets deleted off my c disk :'D

and I have the constant threat that my power is 12%, but its really been like that for 2h already O.o;

I'm mostly worried for all my files, I need to get a backup done asap. Ordering a new laptop is easily done through my bff but I'd rather not lose my files :x

Do you have any finger drives you can use? Or are you having to upload them all and email them to yourself?

I have used up all 3 of the usb sticks I own, that took me ages to dig up. But I've ordered an external hard drive that will hopefully be able to hold everything! And I ordered a new laptop. Both will hopefully make their way to me tomorrow so my lappy will just have to hold on for one more night. Never thought after 8 years of loyal service it'd suddenly flip so jarringly :/

Aw sorry about your laptop, Popodoki. I can totally relate, mine is 8 years old as well, I am afraid that it might die any minute. I always have to keep the charging cable plugged in or it will go off immediately. It is always showing me that it has 0% battery :D

I could honestly live with the battery just being iffy, its the other problems that are not so much fun

I wish computers lasted a decade minimum, but it seems like they have shorter and shorter lifespans as time goes on. You'd think as the tech got better the lifetimes of the tech would also get better, but it doesn't seem to be the case.

at least the prices have gone down as far as I could see! my ole lappy was bought through my first uni at a hefty uni discount and still cost more than the one I ordered. And the new one has much more space and better stats. Not really surprising ofc with such big leaps production has made over the years. What was 'state of the art features' back then just seems silly now c':

That's true! That's something to comfort me with. I mostly stick with desktops though since they do tend to last longer than laptops, and it's easier to replace them piecemeal as needed. They aren't portable, but then I don't tend to do anything which would require a portable computer.
