I don't want to believe people win because of who they are.
I was accused of only winning a contest because I was a mod at the time.
I thought it was very insulting.
we are all free to believe whatever we like, the fact is we are humans and we do support things and people we like including artists.
all you could do is your own personal best and hope that others will like it and support it.
what I would suggest to firn is to include Honorable mentions in the contests. It makes a world of difference to see your work get recognized even if only for a mention.
I joined another website recently and since I was super new I didn't expect to win anything in their art contest, I got an HM though and a small prize and that pushed me to keep entering their contests even though I knew that there were better artists then me there.

The point of a contest is to judge what's best.
Someone shouldn't win just because people like them.
That's not a contest.
When I hold a contest, I choose what I like best - it doesn't matter who the artist is that entered.
An honorable mention would be nice.

Taking into account you don't know which art belongs to who during the voting saying people vote specific artists doesn't make a lot of sense.
Personally I never post contest art anywhere until the voting is done and I feel it should be a rule altough when someone has an unique and recognisable art style people would still recognize it and know who it belongs to.
An honorable mention of maybe 2 / 3 designs Firn liked but didn't make it to the top 6 would be nice

Yep, I definitely got that impression during the item design contest. v_v We'll probably end up with a nice NPC anyway though.
I support a rule against sharing your entries, finished or WIPs. I am ok with both being able to talk about your entries not being able to.
On the prize order: I think the eyes are all more popular for sure, but maybe there are only a couple of the wings on the site or something. *shrug* I'd be fine either way. :')
I have no strong feelings about having Firn-picked honorable mentions (no prize, just recognition) out of the designs that didn't make it into the top 6. But there doesn't seem to be a downside. ^^

Ooooooh, this looks like an interesting contest! I can't wait to see all the designs people think up!
Since some people might like other prizes over the others, maybe the winners could choose based on the order they win in? Like 1st picks from wings/skins/eyes, 2nd picks from remaining two, and 3rd gets the last? Same for 4th, 5th, and 6th.
Like others have mentioned, I really like the idea of having honorable mentions. I feel like Firn is a better judge of design and will be less biased to art style than the general user base. Having honorable mentions might motivate people to enter who have good ideas, but not great art.

But in case I manage: can the NPC be of any species from the NPC character list or are we supposed to think of a completely new one? Or it doesn't matter?
As the first post says, it doesn't matter. You can think of whatever you want.

but... looking at past contests results it was more about quality and who entered... not pointing the finger or anything but since it is voter based people will end up favoring the more visually appealing pieces, we are human in the end...

That may be true, but it is not really something I have control over. If I pick the winners, people accuse me of picking favorites for wrong reasons too. So all I can do is suggest to people to vote for the most appealing idea, not the most appealing design. That's how it should be, even if the reality might look different. The NPC will be redrawn for the site anyway.

The eyes are like 100k each and worth the most, why is it for
The 3rd place winner? Lol
I didn't really think in the sense of 1st, 2nd or 3rd in that way, but wanted them all to be "winners" in the same way. Maybe I should have made that more clear by just giving out the exact same price for all winners. Bad planning, but a thought to hold on to for the next contest.

Though, I wish you provided some more info about the NPC you wanted
There are no infos to provide. It's completely up to you what to design!

I have a question!
I'm actually just wondering, but since this is a "design an NPC" contest, instead of an art contest, would we be allowed to use the Knuffel base to draw it? Since what really matters is physical characteristics, or does it need to be completely our art?

I forgot to ask if the NPC gender should be male or female. I am better with females generally.
also are we allowed to use bases (our own or the knuffel official base) since it's a character design contest.
... why am I getting so excited about this?
