Like two guys once pranked a Medic by glueing all his tools together, and he got them back (way later to not raise suspicion) by having them come in for a routine check-up and have them wake up bright pink.

It was, cause one of them was a very vain mech so the reaction was fierce to say the least c':

some mechs also just have out there paintjobs to begin with. One of my favourite characters rocks flame decals ~ and he rocks them well

he also went through a bad feels period in which he had himself painted blue/purple to show it. Mechs also paint red lines under their optics (eyes) and paint their Autobot/Decepticon badge grey when they're in mourning for another example of paintjobs etc being used as a form of expression.

That sounds really interesting. I bet there's a lot you can do in terms of selfexpression if you can just paint all over yourself :)
