For some reason, when you mentioned palm tree, I instantly thought of Dryad from the Secret of Mana/Seiken Densetsu series. You could always try looking that up for tree inspiration.
...Although, it might be kind of cool to try for a weeping willow or some kind fruit tree. At least with the fruit trees, you could try blossoms in the early stages and upgrade to fruit by the time it reaches its final.
