My second surname was one of those given to orphans a few centuries ago.
There are so many people with that surname that is not related to me at all.

But my first one, well, it's quite rare so it's hard to find people with that surname who are not my close family.

I knew my grandma was from Germany but I didn't know much else.
After she died, I learned that my great grandpa was put in a concentration camp because he didn't agree with Hitler.
I learned that not only Jews got put in them - Germans who didn't follow Hitler were also put in there.
A family member actually wrote a book about him and I need to read it.
My aunt told the story of when he was taken at my grandma's funeral.
She said two Nazis came to take him away and mu grandma ran up and kicked one of them.
He pointed his gun at her like he was going to shoot her but he didn't and he told her she'd make a fine Nazi one day.
They took my great grandpa away.
My dad said someone freed him and he made his way home.
Then my grandpa was in the military and he was stationed in Germany and he met my grandma and they fell in love and he came back to Texas and she eventually immigrated her and they got married and eventually I was born \8u/

Pretty much everyone who did not obey blindly was put into concentration camps.
It's just that Jews were put there for the mere fact of being Jews, while others had a chance at proving their loyalty.

My uncle's parents were at concentration camps.
Back in that time, many Spanish people run from Franco (Franco in Spain, Mussolini in Italy and Hitler in Germany were all children of the same madness) to France - only to being caught there by WWII.

She had been in jail here (for political reasons) and was into political movements there too, so she soon saw herself into a concentration camp.
She was already ready for the gas chamber, cause she quite sick at the time, when the Resistance stormed the camp and fred them all.
She even testified in the Nuremberg trials.

I hardly remember her (she died when I was a child) but I do remember him very well, and I was very very surprised when I learned of their past.

woww. the only historical thing i know about my family is my paternal aunt's husband, he was in the Vietnam War, fighting in Vietnam. He was thrown into jail a few times from what I hear. I guess afterwards he immigrated to America, he was a Vietnamese fighting against the Vietnamese? So he was fighting on the American side but as a Viet.

I had this conversation with my dad:

Me: We had family in a concentration camp? Why? 8u
Dad: Because our family doesn't like being told what to do 8U

My grandma loved watching WWII documentaries.
I remember when we went out of town to visit them, my dad said "Didn't you get enough of that over there \>8U/"

I learned my grandpa was a medic in the military.
I think I'd go for that if I ever did join.

Things like blood and gore don't bother me. In fact, I love making gore art.
I don't think it would bother me to tend to injuries 8u
I don't think I'm military material, though.
I'm way too weak physically and mentally xD
