No, no, that's not the problem. The Japanese characters show up as these weird squares for me.

Usually when I want something non-greekesque for lettering I use the character map in windows. It automagically opens to a character set that has katakana and hiragana currently. *lol* Takes me a little bit longer, but I can type in my entire word/sentance rather than hunting it up one character at a time.
