I think of it on the same level of Ao3 or Fanfiction.net. It's fine for amateurs. Not a place for people trying to build a career, although I'm sure some people who aren't sure about the industry will make the mistake of thinking it's a good place to sit and wait for a publisher to find them.

@jacob: I honestly might read one of her books because I kind of want a break from my fantasy series. And they sound easy to read, like not having to remember all these fantasy places they keep throwing at me (and I'm too lazy to flip to the map page on my ebook to place them)
I think the wattpad books I've read all started out as self-published. You could just tell it was written to be read online and not in book format. I've always been disappointed that I spent money on it. Luckily 99% of the books I own I rarely pay full price except for when I HAVE to have them right away and in hardcover. I find those websites better suited to getting feedback to your writing, or at least almost 10 years ago when I used to publish my stories online. Not sure how they are nowadays.

I've read so much published trash... I mean I don't want to say trash about someone's work, no matter what, but I would expect more from a published book. but then, I know my bias is unfair because there are so many good self-published works that I no longer can assume higher quality from a publishing house. it's just no longer a determinative. that's why I'm kind of sad to hear this about wattpad. I mean one thing is that I have a positive experience with it as a reader (granted there are trashy texts too and I was just lucky), but my other point is that I kind of expected that if there are good writers there, then the place must be offering them something. turns out my conclusion is wrong.

A lot of things people would assume about the publishing industry from the outside are usually off. Like for example I had a three-book contract with a publisher a few years ago which turned out to be one of the worst experiences I've had. When you get a publishing offer people think you've 'made it' but I've made far more money with my self-published works, and had far more fun and less stress doing it all myself. I've also heard a lot of stories about authors who get a huge advance on their debut novel with a big publisher, and when the next book comes around, they either get no advance at all or they can't even find a publisher, and then they end up in severe debt because they started living as if they'd made it. Plus people forget that the advance is, well, an advance, and you might not get any more money from the book ever.
Also assumptions of quality really don't work in the modern industry. Whether you see a book or not, whether it has hundreds of 5-star reviews or not, is down to marketing, not quality. You could write the best book of all time and no one might read it because you don't understand algorithms. Right now I have a book sitting at #1 in an Amazon category under one of my psuedonyms which I will freely admit was no masterpiece at all, and was just written to hit a certain demographic who tend to buy a lot of trashy books

That's honestly why I don't look at reviews. If a big named author puts out a new book, whether it was good or not, they will push them through and the readers will compare it to whether it was better or worse than x book they wrote.
That being said, I don't know anything about wattpad besides the books I've read that started out being self published (that clearly state was written on wattpad I should say to who knows) have not been good imho. But I do agree I've read quite a bit of published trash as well. It is up to everyone's personal opinion.
I also know that if I ever get around to redoing and finishing the novel I was writing a while ago that I will get it self-published (even from what I've researched to get in the industry made me cringe, or at least the publishers I looked at at the time)

Speaking of trashy. I was listening to a podcast type youtube vid last night while cross stitching and I didn't know Cassandra Clare started out writing Harry Potter fanfic. (Not saying her fanfic is trashy as I've never read it, but I know what little fanfic I read, the trashier, the better for me XD)
I was looking at the bargain books/books on sale on the kindle store last night and got The Priory of the Orange Tree for $2 yesterday. I couldn't pass that deal even though I was originally going to buy that in paperback eventually.
I'm having bookstore withdrawals. I usually stop by one if I'm in the area even if I don't buy anything since I just love bookstores so much.

I wonder how long fanfic has been a thing for? I mean, we hear about a lot of writers starting out that way these days. But I wonder if they did it back before the internet as well. Like if Victorians were sitting and writing a new ending to the latest Dickens novel or something. I would be very curious about the history of that.
