Is the old man (nihongou) exclusively a drop or event reward? I know you can't smith him
EDIT, got to the boss node on map 3 and got my team almost destroyed (bless Jiji for being alive). I didn't get to unlock the new map and I didn't get my beads. SADNESS.

I haven't even tried the event yet but if you guys are having trouble with it then I imagine I will as well.

Well they tried to make the event a little more fair now so you can't be fully wiped out in the first two maps ! Yay ! Though the third map is harder :/
@Pachi, Luck does play a strong role in this event. I'm so astounded that my sister went through the whole second map and nothing bad has happened to her ! No losing armies or swords or traps. They were all beads ! D8
