I work at a knit shop selling yarn, helping people with knitting and crochet things, and selling some of my stuff there. As an introvert it is sometimes hard working there and sometimes I want to quit, but then I think of my boss who is like a grandmother to me and the fact that I hate searching for jobs and that stops me. I do have to get a second job starting next year though. I don't make enough to support my habits and lifestyle, and working in a knit shop does not help that either.

Awe, that sounds like a really cute job :3

It really is such a shame that minimum wage is so pathetic - apparently when it was first brought in (in the UK at least) it was enough for a single earner to pay for a house and support a family =/

The wage gap is ridiculous, I really think that a maximum wage should be introduced so that wealth can be more evenly distributed

It is a really cute job and I have the most adorable boss who just turned 80 this year.

My boss always says that raising wages in general is what causes prices to go up, besides greedy people and businesses in general. She remembers a time when she could buy 2 big shopping carts of food and things for the house with $50, maybe under.

In society from the dawn of time there has always been a lower, middle, and upper class. It's just in our day and age it's become such a great gap that there hardly is a middle class anymore. Introducing a maximum wage might even things out a bit, but for how long? I don't mean to be a debbie downer or shoot down your idea, but would it honestly work and how well would people all the way around take it, and how would it effect the economy? I sometimes wonder if using taxes for constructive things instead throwing it at nonsense and keeping more things in house instead of constantly outsourcing because it is perceived to be cheaper, would be better. I wonder about a lot of things.

How are you? Were you able to get an interview or are you still looking?

I work as a teaching assistant at the university I'm at for PhD studies.

Downside...I'm mostly dealing with first year required courses so 90% of the students don't want to be there and don't have any interest in the subjects we cover. It's really hard to get students to engage with the material when they've decided before they come in the door that they don't care.

Upside...I only actively teach three or four 50 minute classes once a week, and other than that my only responsibilities are attending the class lectures, having 2 office hours sometime during the week, and grading/answering student questions. Since the students are so disinterested, I don't ever get a lot of them at office hours or a lot of emails, save when grades come out and there are a handful that are angry about their grades...though most of those students didn't participate and their work was shoddy, so I don't really feel that bad about things. Grading is hard work, but it only lasts for a few weeks a semester, so it's not bad. And some of the work you get in is funny bad. And occasionally someone might even write something interesting!

It really beats a 9-5 job, I could never do one of those, I'd go insane. Having to sit in a cubicle all day, or deal with an endless stream of customers...ugh.

Ultimately, I'd like to be a professor. Again, not a 9-5 cubicle job, and my mind would be really engaged, which is good, because I get really depressed when I get bored.

Pipe dream is writing novels...but I have very little hope for that left.

i can't work for a laundry list of reasons, but nobody would ever hire me anyway. i know this because i tried. i worked as a cashier for a year because my friend also worked there and the management took pity on me. it was nightmarish. i don't plan on ever working a traditional job again. i love to learn how to do things, and i love to learn about things, but unless your job is something like... important to your field... jobs are just manual labor to either produce things to be sold, or perform services that everybody uses. i'm sure many people find those types of jobs fulfilling - to me they are screaming hell nightmares and i'd rather starve to death.

What job do you do?
I'm currently a Senior High School teacher handling computer subjects.

What do you like/ dislike about it?
I used to be a college instructor for computer studies. resigned to pursue a work in the IT industry then mishaps happen (factors like financial shortage for job hunting and got-accepted-but-after-some-months-got-a-rejection-letter.) so I decided to go back into teaching. I thought it would be easier as I'd only be teaching basics and intro subjects related to computer. but my new work environment proved to be very stressful. makin' me terribly missed my old job at the university, but still not planning to go back there. Just waiting for this semester to be over as I have already submitted my resignation letter. hopefully, after these whole shenanigans of job hunting, I'd finally land into a job with a well-paid salary and something I really like to do.

dislikes?
My current work can be compared to a small community unlike my old job at the university so, the hierarchy in our department isn't very much established.
1. co-workers who make a habit of double-crossing and blame game
2. lack of supplies and equipment for teaching materials
3. being a teacher and admin personnel ain't an easy task.
4. unnecessary salary deductions like contributions for events like this and that (which I wouldn't mind if it's for charity)
5. They don't have a definite idea on my specialties (forte) even if I put them all during the submission of documentary requirements. like, if you are an IT you are expected to do all graphics related tasks, aside from clerical and teaching. they tend to overwork some employees. my law student friend said its illegal to give a job description of part-time faculty and part-time personnel but since it still gives a meager pay for a living. I still grabbed the opportunity
6. some co-workers and boss ain't that nice and they tend to give some unnecessary or hurtful remarks either to motivate you or just to intentionally hurt your feelings (aka unprofessionalism) but you still gotta smile and keep your cool

likes
1. I like the location, it's near to a big local church
2. some of my students are nice and I could really see some potential in them
3. It's my first time to handle SHS students
4. they have some really good seminar programs
5. overall its challenging and nerve-wracking environment to be in but I did learn a lot
6. still thankful for the meager wage as it still pays for a living and I could afford some basic necessities we needed at home
Dream job?
somewhere in between to be a Flight Attendant or a Lawyer. I still love teaching but I don't think it's the right time to go back again into teaching industry for me. maybe, after I finish my Masters and get a bit tad older, but if ever ill go back into teaching i'll definitely want to handle tertiary level.
Are you job searching too?
Yes, I'm preparing my resume and taking some skills training for an extra credential. still filled with uncertainties but still willing to take a risk
