I love the entire series and have read it multiple times. The first book is "A Spell for Chameleon". I got hooked when I opened it and saw that he'd appropriated a map of Florida and renamed everything.
yes!! that's the title i knew it didn't sound right still. i love that book.

Alright, posted on GoodReads:
https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/20 ... tasy-world with as much detail as I could remember and a few that I didn't remember to put here.
No problem shadami, that series is pure gold. My favorite characters are the Gap Dragon and the sentient thundercloud that rains on people's picnics. XD

Yes!! That's it!
It's out of print but it looks like I should be able to get it used off Amazon. And there's two more books in the series, sweet!

@shadami
It's by Esther M. Friesner -
here's a list of her books.
Yeah, when I read the quotes Pyrakitt gave us, my first thought was Terry Pratchett? o_O And then I remembered I've read all of his books, and that none of them included a talking cat from NYC. x'D
@pyrakitt
That's great! :D I was thinking about reading the book, but my library system doesn't have it, so I'm going to pass on it.

Saloiq, I've had a bit of luck. It's selling for .01 on Amazon with free shipping for orders over a certain amount, so I'm going to add it to a Christmas order and get it practically for free.

Was planning to post a request for a title here but following one of the links to see what book one of you was talking about. I noticed the mention of the writer I was looking for and found the book I've been looking for for 15 years now. :}
Thank you.
And for those interested it's The Tricksters by Margaret Mahy. :}
