I know people from other sites that I play, but you can also check the forums for those from other flights willing to buy items for others.

Girl, you can't be scared of everything when it comes to trades forever. I used to be so scared to get on forums and talk to people, so for several years people didn't eve know I existed, and once I started posting in this one thread I realized how nice most of the people were. They opened me up to forums and stuff, otherwise I wouldn't be here now. XD Nor on FR actually since it was through them that I found out about the registration period.

But there is no safe way to trade items so I'd either ask friends or buy them in the AH, which is often a bit more expensive but still cheaper than marketplace (at least in case of genes).

True, but if you look through their thread and see that there were a lot of people happy with buying through them then that should indicate that the person is trust worthy.
