Sometimes they were turned into currency, sometimes they poof. We usually look at the food in circulation and how many left over event currencies people have and decide then, because we do not want to give inflation a major boost with each event. I would not rely on them to be turned into food, but spend them as much as possible.
This is why I love it when the event shop has a small thing that only costs 5 or 10 currency. It helps me minimize the event currency I have left over as much as possible.

Thanks for the event and such beautiful items, but unfortunately for me, I don't get alot of time online and don't like to post much unless I have to (stupid social anxieties)... Looks like I won't be able to afford most of the items I want again...

I know how you feel. I have some social anxieties too... And those items are great so it really hurts
I still like that kind of events though. I play word games mostly

lol Just realized event started on the day I was married!! Why so many things happened on the day I got married!!!???
Anyway I guess this would be the best time when I start posting and meeting new people :D
