this is my mobile number it's different to a home phone number.
Also being in Australia makes it different to other countries as well.
In this case, if it worked as it should have, I changed from Optus to Telstra, which are two phone network providers of quite a few to choose from here, but those two are best especially where I live.
So I'm on BYO phone plan, I have a unlocked mobile phone and I changed as noted in the above my phone number was transferred cause it's in my name on optus's system and just waiting for telstra to approve it and all.
as for house phone thing, that's a different system.

Ahhh, okay, I think I understand a little....
I hope it gets approved soon. Can you go online at all with it before it is approved or is everything waiting on that?

Well, I'm about halfway done and a little tired, so I'll send off what I have and go take a nap and then finish the rest.
(I am so amused by the way Lord Wuffel's hair conceals some of the Argus forehead eyes so it looks mostly like a regular 3rd eye)

I've had the same mobile number for just over 10 years. This conversation just made me realise that. Kinda neat.
Having a phone number is a bit like having a web address. You can own a number and have it registered to your name. But if you choose to change providers, then they can't sell you that number because it's already owned by a different company. You're always kind of just renting the number until you change phones, just like how if you don't renew your domain name, it's no longer yours. Although, of course, you can renew your contract and keep your domain name or stay with the same phone company and keep your number.

It's possible to keep your number while changing your provider, providers offer that all the time here

Akili Li wrote:... okay, old style numbers are associated with addresses, right? New ones are associated with the physical phone? But... your name, instead? So... wait. How does that work. I'm so confused!
Mobile phone numbers are not really associated with the physical phone, but rather with the sim card, which is a little piece of plastic (with a chip) that you get from your mobile phone provider. You put that little card into your phone to allow it to work with your number. That way you can easily keep your number when you switch phones, as long as you don't also switch the provider (as River did) - you just put the little card into the new phone and everything should just work with your old number on the new phone, no hassle.
Now when you switch the provider, taking your number with you is a bit more complicated, as people already explained, basically because you get a new sim card that you want to have the old number. For that the old provider needs to sort of give the number up to the new one, since only one company should give out each number. You don't want some other person with another provider to have the same phone number as you, after all!
