funnily enough most of my friends are on these avatar forums. i have a few irls but we're scattered- for college or work, various reasons.

i don't know anything about art especially digital art but i do really admire it because it's got its own challenges? like drawing on the tablet and having it appear on the computer screen. it takes a different kind of hand eye coordination and a different sense of scaling it to the screen- idk if i'm putting this across well but, i feel like learning digital art after traditional would be like learning art all over again from scratch, in some ways.

and the art programs look so complicated too. and people work with layers. and it's all of it just mind-blowing.

@Mynah
I met my best friend on an avatar site. It was actually her freebie thread we met at and we've been friends for...3 years now i think?
And my other friend is my sister lol.

Art itself is challenging as it's a learning skill meaning it takes a lot of learning. Though I think every skill is like that. Takes a lot to get use to. I've done digital art for roughly 10 years as I did pixel dolls before digital drawings/paintings. So I do have quite a bit experience with programs. Plus in art programs you can uncheck things you don't need or won't use. It's kinda just all about figuring out what you need. As for layers, they aren't necessarily very complex. For me they are necessary. I use about 40+ layers. Rarely I will use under 20.

I was never super into traditional art so I am weaker in traditional art. So it wasn't super hard for me.

that's sweet :qcute: i really like making friends on forums, it's like having pen pals. and people i've met on forums have frequently been nicer than many people irl so i'm also less cynical about sites like this one, just going off personal experience.
also i love freebie threads. hangouts but with adorable art scattered in. :qh:

that's true. the only skill i have is writing and i have been at it since i was a child. whenever i think of beginning a new hobby, or learning something new, i find it so daunting when i remember how long it took me to get good at something. but there is no rule that i have to be good at my hobbies. just that i should enjoy them... i should keep telling myself that. :qhehe:

wow. 40+ layers! i know you don't find them necessarily complex but they just sound like so much to keep track of to me. kudos to you, really.

i love love pixel art. i actually wish there were avatar sites with cutesy hard pixeling, like ernya and kinsaki, that were active/up currently. i also prefer hard pixels in games. i guess i have old-school tastes :qlol:

I haven't made very many friends when it comes to avatar sites
but I also haven't made them anywhere else either.
A lot of my friendships I feel over the years were very one sided. :mcheh:

I'm not very good at making friends.

I'm usually found in my own art shop cause I love overall just updating it
with new artworks. :qh:

Yeah, as long as you're having fun it shouldn't matter if you're good at it or not. For me though, I want to be a lot better at art as i want to turn my art into a freelance career so I try my best to get better and study whenever I can. Painting is something I am not very good at and want to improve at.

I make new layers every time I do something new in case I don't like it. If I do like it though I do merge them. A lot of my layers are either just fun ideas I've had for the piece, colored layers or sketch layers. I'm always afraid to ruining a drawing even digitally, so i make new layes in case I end up not liking it. And the next thing I know i got 40 of them lol. I do merge some of them but then I just create more lmao.

Yeah i totally get that. I wasn't on ernya for long. When I get real into it, it was closing down. :mcomg:
