here's the dictionary definition i pulled up

meta
adjective
(of a creative work) referring to itself or to the conventions of its genre; self-referential.
"the enterprise is inherently ‘meta’, since it doesn't review movies, for example, it reviews the reviewers who review movies"

That explanation felt like it didn’t explain anything at all lol. XD it just kinda made me more confused. XD

so for example, a shojo manga isn't meta.

but a shojo manga about a girl entering a shojo manga and fighting the tropes in it, is meta.

cause then it's a shojo about shojo.

and the dictionary definition gave the example of movies because

review of a movie isn't meta

review of reviewing or reviewers is meta
