Yeah back in the day there were a lot of hangouts in other languages. I remember one that was French and the owner actually was super awesome and tried to teach a few people how to write in French.

I should know it because most of my family still speaks it to some extent, but I never truly learned.

I think the high school lessons we all take get forgotten
Hell, I took ASL for my HS foreign language credits up at the local college and I barely remember it lol

The Spanish teacher we had wouldn't dock you for having her help you with words
At all
Not even on your final. Is why I wanted to take ASL at the college instead (no interest in French)
She moved away and the next one assumed they'd been properly taught, iirc she was NOT happy to find out that no one was at the level she expected

I never took a language. My high school got around it because we had farm based programming

I took a spanish elective in middle school. Like it wasn’t for very long, maybe a few weeks. My spanish teacher was also my french teacher so she would say that i was pronouncing something wrong (cuz spanish/french are a bit similar)
I took chinese school every saturday tho.

Its funny because as you mentioned French and Spanish are super similar, and when I would try to say something in Spanish, my husband would tell me that I was speaking with a French accent.
