It probably works best with deep and rich purples, yeah. But it probably also depends on the shade of gold (if we're not just talking KofK colours bit IRL), I can see a lighter purple working with a light and more cool shade of gold.

Agreed on the pastels! But sometimes that can look nice as well, when girly is not an issue.
