It probably works best with deep and rich purples, yeah. But it probably also depends on the shade of gold (if we're not just talking KofK colours bit IRL), I can see a lighter purple working with a light and more cool shade of gold.

I've always like purple and yellow. They look best in bold colors.

Pastels look a bit more girly.
