@Akili yes, i'd say it still is very popular. I'm surprised you haven't heard of it more

There's a new X-Men movie coming out next year actually

Oh, wow, somehow I had gained the impression it was a movie that came out a couple of decades ago, but this sounds current! Do you like it? Would you recommend it?

Well, according to google, I think the first movie came out in 2000, so you are right about that. I guess it's just been so popular over the years that they keep making new movies because people keep watching them
I wouldn't call myself a fan but i'd say I like the movies, although I haven't seen them in a while. I'm actually a little confused because there are so many movies, some of them are specifically X-Men related, while others are about certain characters (The Wolverine, Logan etc.)
I saw
Logan in cinemas when it came out and I remember really enjoying that movie, but i'm not sure if someone would enjoy it quite as much if they didn't already know the character, I would still recommend it though

The movies are quite popular, indeed. There are so many of them!
I enjoyed the cartoon series. The movies are nice, but not awe-inspiring, imo.

(I just realized the list on the front page is from last week; don't remember if I entered or not. So just in case....

there. Hopefully it's not a duplicate.)
So is it like Batman, then, where it's a cartoon AND a bunch of movies? And it's got its own universe thing going on? But I've never been sure if the Batman things are supposed to be all remakes of each other or if they treat the other movies as real and have happened or what....

Yes, there is also a universe for X-men. Buuut as X-Men belongs to Marvel, that is the Marvel universe. Batman belongs to DC, so that is the DC Universe.
And yes, both started out as comics, then cartoons, then movies :)

The comics universes are pretty complex. They can even have different timelines within the comic, for example Teen Titans have Earth 52 and New Earth, to name just a few (can't remember, but there's a shitload of more). I don't know about Marvel but DC tends to mix and change incidents as they see fit, and sometimes the same heroes can have completely different origins only because they are present in several timelines.
With cartoons and movies based on the comics, they are usually just adaptations. Unless the studios (DC, Marvel) officially state that "hey, this shit is canon, don't hate on it", but then they mess with it themselves by making another timeline and changing the facts.
At least that's my experience with DC

I've never gotten involved with Marvel characters to dig up the comics facts about them :)
So to refer to your doubts, Batman movies are probably just loosely based on the comics and are their own thing, then the same goes for Batman cartoons and are probably seperate from the movies. As I said, to me they seem like different views on the same thing ;)
Also, DC tends to avoid repeating the same character in different shows. for example they made this new show Titans, adaptation of Teen Titans, and excluded the character of Cyborg from it, because (I believe) he is present in the Justice League franchise, even though Cyborg was one of the original Titans.
I elaborated too much ;_______;

I admit to being just as much or more confused now.
